Francisco “Frank” “Mr. Z”, Zayas Jr., 74, of Ellwood City passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at VA Medical Center – Oakland following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born February 12, 1947 in San Juan, Puerto Rico he was the son of the late Francisco Sr. and Dolores Cuba Zayas. He and Jan Dargis Zayas were married in Jamaica 16 years ago.
Francisco served in the USMC during the Vietnam War at the Marine Barracks Sabana Seca, in Puerto Rico. Frank was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and many Marksmanship Badges. He retired from General Motors as a supervisor after over 30 years of service. Following his retirement from GM, Frank taught at Lincoln High School as a substitute teacher where he was lovingly known as Mr. Z.
Survivors include his wife Jan; three daughters, Rebekah Bauder Grinnen of Ellwood City, Nicole and her wife Snow Balaz Zayas of Youngstown, Ali Zayas of Texas; son, Francisco Zayas III of Columbiana; four grandsons, Liam, Eliott, and Cole Patrick Grinnen, and Francisco Javier Zayas, IV; three granddaughters, Sadie Grinnen, Ellie and Emma Zayas; two sisters, Maggie and Maria Zayas both of Florida.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday June 29, 2021 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Holy Redeemer Church on June 30, 2021 at 10:00 am.
Military Rites will be observed.
Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
