Ellwood City Wolverines Takes 5-3 Victory Over New Brighton
Ellwood City completed a back-to-back sweep over New Brighton, defeated the Lions on Wednesday, 5-3
New Brighton took an early lead in the second inning when Seth Tanaka singled on a 3-2 count, scoring a run to push the visiting Lions lead to 2-1 but Ellwood was able to rebound.
The Wolverines (2-4 overall) took the lead for good with three runs in the third inning. Ashton Wilson singled (2-2, 2 runs), scoring one run, and the Wolverines scored a second run on a stolen base, and Bucky Biskup grounded out, scoring the final run of the 3-run frame.
Ryan Gibbons earned the win for Ellwood City. Gibbons lasted six and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out seven. Nick Magnifico threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Magnifico recorded the last out to earn the save for the Wolverines.
Bobby Budacki took the loss for New Brighton. Budacki allowed five hits and five runs over six innings, striking out six.
Wilson led Ellwood City with two hits in two at bats while Sammi DiCaprio swatted a double for the Wolverines.
Ellwood City next travels to Blackhawk on Saturday, April 10th and on Monday will travel to Freedom to continue their season play.
Despite Strong Fight, Riverside Baseball Can’t Top Neshannock
Riverside fought back after falling down by nine runs in the second inning but the comeback fell just short though, in a 14-12 defeat to Neshannock on Wednesday.
Mitchell Garvin, Logan Greer, Curtis Johnston, Seth Kristophel, Madden Boehm, and Evan Burry each picked up RBIs to power the Riverside offense in their comeback bid.
Riverside couldn’t keep up with Neshannock offensive onslaught early in the game. Nathan Rynd hit a three-run homerun in the first inning and grand slam in the second inning as the Lancers raced out to an early 9-0 lead.
The Panthers tallied five runs in the fifth inning. Kristophel, Boehm, Burry, and Aaron Falk each drove in runs during the inning to tighten the contest at 11-9, but Riverside could get no closer.
Riverside totaled 11 hits with Johnston and Falk (two doubles)collecting multiple hits for the Panthers. Johnston went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Riverside. Burry collected a team-high three RBIs in the contest.
After splitting the back-to-back contests with Neshannock, the Panthers (3-2 overall) will next host Aliquippa on Monday, April 12 at 4:00 p.m.
Riverside Softball Drops Game To Neshannock After Late Score
The Riverside softball team lost the lead late in an 8-2 defeat to Neshannock on Wednesday.
The game was tied at one with Neshannock batting in the top of the fifth when N Nogay singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run, ultimately the game winning run for the Lancers.
The Riverside struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Neshannock, posting six errors in the field.
Riverside knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the fourth inning. Taryn Schmitt drove in one when she doubled. Mia Williams (1 triple), Rosenberger, Schmitt, and Sydney Hale each collected one hit for the Panthers.
Measel was in the circle for Neshannock and surrendered one run on two hits over six innings, striking out seven and walking zero.
Sam Rosenberger led things off on the rubber for Riverside. The pitcher surrendered six runs on five hits over five innings, striking out five. Aliya Ottaviani threw two innings out of the bullpen.
The Lady Panthers (1-1 overall) next will travel to Mohawk on Monday afternoon for a 4:15 p.m. contest versus the Warriors.
