The Ellwood City Wolverines girls and boys basketball teams each defeated the Panthers and swept the rivalry doubleheader Tuesday night at Riverside High School.

The girls ran away with a 42-12 victory in the first game while the boys used a strong second half to collect its 80-53 victory in the second game of the evening.

For the girls, the cousin duo of Junior Kyla Servick and Freshman Claire Noble combined for 30 points. Noble earned her first double-double of her high school career,  scoring 17 points, including two 3-pointers, and pulling down 11 rebounds. Servick poured in 13 points to pace the victors. Other scorers for Ellwood City (4-7 overall, 3-7 Section 1-3A) included seniors Emily Borroni, Chloe Sturgeon, Olivia Battaglia, and Junior Emily Sedgwick.

The girls game Wednesday night vs Freedom has been canceled but the seniors will still be recognized with their parents at 6:00 p.m. prior to the boys game versus Laurel scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

For the Ellwood City boys, Alexander Roth scored 22 of his game-high 29 points in the second half to help the Wolverines pull away from the host Panthers.

Ellwood City held a 33-25 halftime advantage before racing out in the second half, scoring 47 second half points.  The Wolverines (8-4 overall, 6-3 Section 1-3A) finished with eight 3-pointers in the game with Roth finished with four and Danny Ditri connected on three 3-pointers en route to his 13 point performance.  Joey Roth scored 15 first half points on his way to a 19 point scoring effort.

“We have been developing as a team and sharing the ball and have continued to be very unselfish,” said head coach Steve Antuono.  “Players have played their roles well, and that has created some wins. Kids are worried about the wins, not stats, and that has been the goal all season.”

The Roth brothers combined to score 58 points, joining a family theme from the earlier girls contest that saw cousins Kyla Servick and Claire Noble combine for 30 points.

Sean Falk scored 16 points (four 3-pointers) in defeat for Riverside.  The Panthers connected on seven 3-pointers as a team.

The WPIAL playoff seedings were also announced Tuesday evening, placing both the Ellwood City boys and girls in the expanded playoff action.  Ellwood City boys, winners of five of their last six games, will host an opening round match-up at Lincoln High School as an 11-seed versus #22 Valley at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1.  The girls were ranked 12th of 18 teams and will travel to play #5 seed South Park on March 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

“I’m very proud of the way our team has battled through multiple shutdowns and cancellations due to COVID-19,” said girls head coach Marc Heil.
