Christmas Tree Disposal Information

With the Christmas season winding down, the once lively trees that brought joy and light up our homes are dying and needles are rapidly covering homes.

According to a release made available Monday, Ellwood City Borough residents may drop off their live Christmas trees (decorations removed) for disposal at Stiefel Park, just inside the park entrance from Brighton Road, now through January 31.  There will be a sign to mark the disposal drop location.  Drop off will be available during normal hours the park is open to the public.

Residents who drop off trees are reminded that they must remove all decorations and stands from the trees prior to the drop-off. Please only drop off live trees, NO artificial trees will be accepted!

Beaver County residents can also take advantage of a free Christmas Tree Recycling program.  According to the Department of Sustainability and Waste Management, residents can bring their tree to the Beaver County Recycling Center in Brady’s Run Park and place the live Christmas Tree in the compost bin.

“Proper disposal of a live tree is beneficial to the environment,” says Holly Vogt. “When live trees are thrown away with the garbage, space in a landfill is needlessly consumed. Recycling your Christmas tree returns it to nature. The trees will be chipped and made into useful compost that is used to plant community gardens, nourish valuable farm land, and provide high quality soil to many individuals.”

Not interested in simply disposing of your live tree? According to Spruce.com you can provide shelter for backyard wildlife, use the branches to mulch perennials, start a new compost pile, or make it into mulch.  Some even donate trees to farms for goats, sheep or even the chickens to feast and help recycle the Christmas tree.
