Ellwood City Community Recognizes Veterans on Pearl Harbor Day

The Ellwood City community is proud to honor all of our veterans on Pearl Harbor Day – December 7, 2020.

The Borough of Ellwood City and Mayor Anthony Court issued a statement thanking all of the veterans across this great country for their courage and dedicated commitment to the United States of America.

“As a community we are proud of your service and sacrifices which you all have so freely given,” said Mayor Court in a statement. “It is a privilege to honor, Joseph Gasper, a Pearl Harbor survivor who served our country with honor and dignity.”

“Thank you, Mr. Gasper, we are truly blessed to know you!” concluded Mayor Court.

Last year, Mayor Court proclaimed December 7, 2019 as “Joseph Gasper Day.”

Each year, Pearl Harbor Survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A further 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft.

On Aug. 23, 1994, the United States Congress designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Every year, remembrance events are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, culminating in a commemoration ceremony on Dec. 7. To see videos of these events, please visit their YouTube page.
