About 2 months ago a large envelope full of pictures arrived at our house. It was from Vera and it was pictures of our children (now grown men) in various childhood activities. Vera watched over them for many years and chronicled their school years as faithfully as we did. I was thrilled to have the pictures but immediately thought that it was a message. Before I could call her our phone rang. It was Vera. She said she was having surgery and to use her words, “it was bad.” Still cheerful, Vera told us her doctor said it would be ok, but “just in case” she wanted to say goodbye. We talked about our “kids” and grandkids as well as hers. Vera enjoyed celebrating all of those additions to our family as much as we did. The we talked about her kids and grandkids. Those stories sustained her while she fought through her illness. She was absolutely the best person we could ever have hoped for to watch and nuture our kids while we worked. We celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and eventually retirement together. Her laugh was infectious. Her faith unwavering. Her love of the people in her life unlimited. And we felt the same about her. Rest easy dear friend.
