The United States Department of Agriculture will begin distribution of rabies vaccinations by helicopter in Beaver County on August 10, and continue thru August 17, as part of their National Rabies Management Program. Baits containing the rabies vaccination will be dispersed by helicopter in order to reach desired locations that would otherwise be difficult to access.
During this time period, area residents may see helicopters moving within the same area multiple times in a slow manner. While this could be viewed as unusual and alarming, it is necessary in order to ensure sufficient baiting.
Oral rabies vaccines produce little threat to humans and animals when exposed, but the public is asked to avoid contact with the baits to increase the likelihood of consumption by raccoons.
See attachment below for a FACT SHEET published by the USDA with additional information about the vaccination distribution, including what to do if a bait must be moved or disposed of; what to do if a pet eats a bait; and who to call concerning accidental contact with baits.
