A short scrimmage game took place Friday evening in Koppel Borough after the Potter Baseball Tour visited and spend hours working on the borough baseball field. Borough volunteers helped put the finishing touches on the refurbished Sixth Avenue Baseball Field.
Led by former Ellwood City pitching ace Jeff Potter, this elite team not only plays a month-long schedule against ball teams all over the northeast, they also perform community service in every town they visit. The Potter’s Pirates spent three days laboring on the Historic Koppel diamond to make this pick-up game a reality.
The scrimmage pitted the Koppel ‘Old Timers’ against ‘The World’ and offered all former Koppel players the chance to come out and take some swings. The World team featured the Potter’s Pirates baseball team, plus players from Wampum, Ellwood City, Beaver Falls and the surrounding area.
Over 200 players and fans were on hand to watch the first game at the Koppel diamond in over 20 years. The event was interspersed with social distancing and some mask wearing, a constant reminder of the Covid 19 pandemic, which had plagued the entire country in 2020.
After falling behind The World Team 11-1 after four innings, the Koppel Old Timers rallied to close the gap to three runs, but with the tying run left in the on deck circle, a great defensive play by The World’s centerfielder ended the rally and dashed the Old Timers comeback bid. The Potter Baseball ‘World Team’ prevailed 11-8 in six innings.
