In honor of the new Community Garden Utility Shed at ‘5 Points’ intersection in Ewing Park the Department of Public Works held a poster contest for children ages 4 and 12 last month.
The winners were promised to have their poster on display for a whole year at the garden as well as gift certificate from McDonald’s. The winners were announced as Mason is the winner of the 4-6 age group, Alex is the winner of the 7-9 group and Kyra of the age 10-12 group. Last names will not be released due to permission not being granted by parents because some submissions were done as projects at the summer playground program, said Rhiannon Schnell of the public works department.
“The children in our Borough are very talented,” said Schnell in a statement. ” We are grateful to the tiny hands that took the time to create such vibrant art for our community garden project.”
Schnell described the deciding process as difficult and said that the entries that were not chosen for their category will have their art work displayed in frames in the halls of the Borough building. The winning drawings will each be showcased as large 4-foot poster boards showcased on the three sides of the utility shed. The poster boards were printed and provided by local sign outfitter Signs by Sam.
“There was too much creativity shown and we are elated to display it,” said Schnell.
The new location holds 28 beds, which is the same as it did at the previous location, but the overall goal is to get more beds as well as build on to their volunteer numbers. Currently, they have 15 new volunteers.
Ellwood City Manager David Allen enabled the borough to get a grant that included a shed and tools, and borough workers did all the work to move the gardens from the Bridge Street location. All food grown at this location will be donated to the Holy Redeemer Food Bank.
