One of the most entertaining, and patriotic, summer activities are the fireworks. Whether it’s an expensive firework show in a city or small, dollar store sparklers, no matter your age, everyone loves them.
In anticipation of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Borough of Ellwood City Police have asked for local residents to be mindful and aware of current rules and guidelines as the department has already fielded calls about unlawful activities.
In Pennsylvania, the legal age for purchasing fireworks is 18, however there are a lot more rules set in place for them. Within the state of Pennsylvania, fireworks that are set off on public or private property must be set off 150+ feet from an occupied structure, whether or not a person is actually present, they cannot be set off from within a motor vehicle or building, and cannot be fired at a building or vehicle.
Fireworks cannot be discharged while the person is under the influence of alcohol, a controlled substance, or another drug.
While non-commercial consumer grade fireworks are legal, “Display fireworks” are still only to be used by professionals with a permit. Firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, and similar fireworks that contain a maximum of 50 milligrams of explosive material. The expansion includes those fireworks that were previously only available to out-of-state residents.
