The WPIAL revealed updated boys and girls basketball section alignments Tuesday and Ellwood City and Riverside basketball teams each saw a slight turnover in their section opponents.
For the boys, Ellwood City and Riverside both will continue to reside in Class 3A Section 1 with the likes of Beaver Falls, Laurel, Lincoln Park, Mohawk, and Neshannock. Section powerhouse Lincoln Park has a hearing with PIAA to decide if competitive balance should place the Leaopards in 4A, but if there is a successful appeal, Lincoln Park will remain in Section 1-3A.
Former section foes Aliquippa and New Brighton both move to Class 3A Section 2 while Laurel (14-8 overall) and Mohawk (4-18 overall) both move up from Class 2A Section 3 to join the Wolverines and Panthers in the seven team section.
For the girls, Ellwood City and Riverside will also both remain in Class 3A Section 1. Although the reigning section champs Beaver Bobcats move up to Class 4A, the girls will face a new reigning section champion this coming season – a North Catholic (21-1 overall) girls team that drops from Class 4A. The section will also add Laurel (15-7 overall)
Former foes Avonworth, moving to Section 3, and Neshannock, dropping to Class 2A, round out the realignment for the girls.
The Lady Wolverines and Lady Panthers will now be joined by Beaver Falls, Freedom, Laurel, Mohawk, and North Catholic this coming season.
