With 96 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the state of Pennsylvania as of March17, 2020—one announced in Beaver County—Ellwood City residents were taking to Facebook to suggest use of the Ellwood City Medical Center (ECMC) as an option for treatment and testing.
During Monday night’s Borough Council Meeting, Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court said he has received numerous calls this week asking if the ECMC will be a post for virus testing and treatment.
Court said that scenario is not a possibility.
“We don’t own the hospital,” he said.
Court said that in order for that to happen, a trustee would have to get involved. He said that is very unlikely and would be a lengthy process.
Ellwood City Borough Manager David Allen addressed the cancellation of upcoming events. He said that all events planned for borough parks or property planned within the next few weeks will not be held. This will include any team practices or community events. However, he stressed that the parks will remain open. He said any further cancellations or decisions will be made as needed based on the progression of the Coronavirus.
Allen also announced that the borough will suspend electric shutoffs at this point in time.
Mayor Court warned the elderly to be vigilant when it comes to phone scams. He said vulnerable times bring out the scam artists.
