Riverside Boy’s Swimming Team Off To PIAA State Championships

After earning WPIAL gold on Day One of the WPIAL Swimming Championships on Thursday, the Riverside boys’ swimming again placed well on Day Two of the Class-AA WPIAL championship meet.

Senior Josiah Shaffer posted a 2.17 second time drop in the 100 breast, securing a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:01:64. Sophomore Alexander Roth, juniors Graham Kralic and Hayden Panek, and freshman Sam Kline also secured a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard free relay after posting a notable 6.18-second drop for a 3:20:57 finish.

Despite having only five boys swimming, the team scored 166 points and finished 3rd out of 37 teams in the WPIAL, behind Indiana and North Gate.

After two days of championship swims and other top performances at the University of Pittsburgh Trees Pool, WPIAL individuals and relays now are preparing for the PIAA Class AAA and AA meets March 11-14 at Bucknell.

The PIAA released the preliminary psych sheets for both swimming and diving Sunday morning. They contain both the automatic and at-large qualifiers from each of the 12 district championship meets.

The Riverside Boys 200-yard Medley relay team earned seeds in the 200-yard Medley Relay and in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.

Shaffer earned a 7-seed in the 200 Yard IM, and 14-seed in the 100-yard Breastroke. Alexander Roth qualified for the 25 swimmer field in the 50-yard Freestyle.
