In what comes as a surprise to many, but also may be a sign of things to come, the young Wolverines boys basketball team stunned and upset Aliquippa Friday night, winning 51-50 on the road.
Sophomore Alexander Roth led all scorers, finishing with four 3-pointers and 22 points, to lead the Wolverines in their come from behind victory. Ellwood City, who trailed 26-22 at halftime, outscored Aliquippa 18-11 in the final frame and cemented the one point victory with clutch free throw shooting late. Roth scored 10 points in the pivotal fourth quarter.
Junior Ryan Gibbons collected all four of his points from the line in the fourth quarter including the free throws that gave the Wolverines their final one-point lead. Sophomore Steve Antuono scored 17 points to pace the Wolverines (1-0 section, 4-1 overall)
Aliquippa, which advanced to the WPIAL semifinals last year, had defeated Ellwood City 72-43 and 90-29 last season. The ‘Quips finished Friday’s contest 5-24 from the free throw line, including disastrous 2-16 in the second half.
Elwood City next hosts a conference game versus New Brighton on Tuesday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m.
