Justin Hand, a soon-to-be-senior at Riverside High School, finished with a second-round 77 last Tuesday, missing the cut after his first two rounds (76+77=153) at the 2019 US Junior Amateur Championship.
Hand had qualified for the tournament after finishing first in a field of 46 golfers at a sectional qualifier held in June at Grove City Country Club.
Three players finished -4 to top the leaderboard after two days. The field was cut at 64 golfers which then moved to match play.
“I really hit the ball well and putted very good,” Hand said. “[However] I think I need to improve on closing my rounds.”
After stroking a bridge on a Par-3 5th hole Tuesday, Hand settled into a front nine 36 (+1). But after four consecutive pars on the back nine, Hand carded five consecutive bogeys to finish +6 for the day and +11 for the tournament.
Hand’s best shot of the tournament was on hole #13 on Tuesday. “I had a sidehill lie in the rough where the ball was below my feet,” said Hand.
He hit a 7 iron to about 15 feet.
With Hand heading into his senior year, he plans on focusing more on the mental side of his game and just to “keep practicing and just keep improving”.
Hand will be playing at Penn State at a hurricane event August 3 and 4 and in an AIJGA event in Baltimore from August 12 to the 14.
If Justin is not at the golf course the Panther golfer is either working out, spending time with my family, or hanging out with my friends.
