Dorothy Stevenson, 94

Dorothy Irene Dashield Stevenson, 94, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Sunday, February 3, 2019 surrounded by her loving Family!

Born September 10, 1924 to the late Evelyn Irene Doll and James Oscar Dashield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Patricia Ann; son, Milroy Stevenson Jr.; two sisters, Lillian Harris and Ann Waldron; two son-in-laws, Kenneth Johnson Sr. and Nathaniel Burge; and sister-in-laws, Mryties Dashield. Her best friend, Dorothy Barrett also preceded her in death.

She is survived by a sister, Pearl Joan Dashield of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Nathaniel Dashield, of Cleveland; two daughters, Marlene Dashield Johnson of Ellwood City, Charlotte Stevenson Burge of Cleveland, Ohio; three sons, James Dashield (Shelli) of Ellwood City, Mark Stevenson (Sandy) of Florida and Dana Stevenson (Jackie) of Cleveland, Ohio. She also leaves behind her best friend, Miss Lonnie Robinson of Wampum and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was lovingly called “Gugee” by her grandchildren.

She graduated in 1944 from Lincoln HIgh School. She worked at the Knitting Mill and Leeds and Northrup. She was hired by the Ellwood City Borough as a school crossing guard, which she worked for 30 years, retiring at the age of 86. She loved her job as school crossing guard, hearing the kids tell her how their summers went and receiving gifts from the kids and their parents at Christmas time. A friendly wave and smile to all who passed her corner.

During her early years she was a member of Love Hope Baptist Church where she was a soloist and sang with the Community Chorus under the direction of Bill Eady. Visiting other churches to sing, she would receive standing ovations as she belted out “Didn’t It Rain”

Later she became a long time member of First Baptist in Chewton where she served in the Senior Missionary and helped in the kitchen. She resided at Schill Manor for over 20 years where she was President of activities, played Bingo, bowling, and also a member of a Bible study group. She also had a special day named after her called “Dorothy’s Day” where the residents would gather every Tuesday to talk, laugh, and have fun.

Her favorite past time in her younger years was roller skating and was a skating guard at the old Parkstown Roller Rink, now closed. Her favorite color was red which fit right in with being a member of the Red Hats.

She was also awarded a certificate for completing the Elderly Outreach Volunteer training program. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Family and friends will gather to remember Dorothy on Saturday, February 9 from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 pm. at the Marshall Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. Her pastor, Rev. Eric Board will officiate. Interment will follow in Clinton Cemetery.
