The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines defended home court Monday night in a backyard battle with neighboring Beaver Falls, defeating the Tigers 53-48. Ellwood City used points from distance in pivotal third quarter and later at the free throw line to secure the section win.
Three out of six player were in double figures including senior Isabella Roth with a team-high 15 points (four 3-pointers; 3-8 from the line). Roth was joined in double figures by freshman Kyla Servick with 10 points (one 3-pointer, 3 FG’s, 1-2 FT), and sophomore Chloe Sturgeon with 11 points ( 7-10 free throws). Also making contributions were Natalia Greco with 8 points, Maria Ioanilli 7 points (5-5 FT, 9 rebounds), and Olivia Battaglia with a steal and a layup.
After trailing after one period the Wolverines worked together to build a 12 point cushion into the second half, using multiple Roth 3-pointers and holding the visiting Tigers to six points in the third quarter. Beaver Falls tried to retaliate with a late press but Ellwood City earned trips to the free throw line where they converted late to keep the Tigers at bay. The Wolverines finished 16-27 as a team from the free throw line.
The Lady Wolverines next hit the road for a section contest at Mohawk on Thursday beginning at 7:00pm.
