Monday Night Cornhole League Set To Begin in January

The Western Pennsylvania Cornhole Association will begin a Monday night Cornhole League.

For the next 10 weeks, players of all skill levels are invited to the Chewton Polish Club where at 7:00 p.m. players will participate in a blind draw for their partners and proceed to participate in the tournament. Due to the tournament being held in a club, participants must be 21 and older. The pairs will then compete in a double elimination tournament with standard rules and be guaranteed a minimum of two matches each week of the season.  At the end of the tournament, each team partner will be awarded league points. This league is holds a no commitment standard, players can come out when they want and join when they want.

“(We’re) just trying to get people to come out (to the tournament) and get people playing (cornhole),” said Jared Nash.

Nash is the co-founder of the WPCA. WPCA was started by Ryan Kelli.

League points will be given in the following manner; 1st place will receive 10 points, 2nd will receive 8, 3rd will receive 6, 4th will receive 4, and 5th and 6th place will each get 2 points. Any and all remaining players will get a point each.

The start time will be at 6:30 p.m. for registration and practice, with bags flying at 7:00 p.m.

There is a $7 entry fee per man per week. $5 of the fee will go towards the weekly prize pool, while the remaining $2 will go towards the boards, bags, scoring towers, and the prize at the end of the 10 week session. So far the weekly payout percentages go as followed: 1st week at 50%, 2nd week at 30%, and the 3rd week at 20%.

The standings of the tournaments, along with a list of the active participants, will be released and maintained on the Western Pennsylvania Cornhole Association Facebook page. At the completion of 10 weeks, the individual with the most points will be named League Champion and be awarded a set of  custom stick and slick bags.

On the bags used by the league, the names of their sponsors can be found, as well as on the boards. The boards were sponsored by Reeds Services, while the bags hold the names of local businesses like Pete’s Uptown, Mac’s Motors,  Phil’s Bar and Grill, Beachem’s Sandblasting, and Throw’n Bagz.

In addition to the weekly tournament players have the option to participate in the weekly drawing for a chance at winning even more money. The winner of the drawing get 4 bags to throw at an “Air Mail” board. Each bag is worth 25% of the pot. Example: If a player wins the drawing and makes 2 out of the 4 bags he receives 50% of the pot. The 50% remaining money gets carried over to the following week. If the player doesn’t make any bags the full amount gets carried over to the next week.

During the warmer seasons, Nash said that the WPCA is trying to find an outdoor space to hold these tournaments where players of all ages will be welcomed and able to play.

“I found that once people come out one time, they seem to get hooked on the game,” Nash added.
