Our two local high school boys basketball teams split their opening games in selective Holiday Tournaments on Thursday. Ellwood City defeated Moniteau in its opening game of a Mercer Tournament while Riverside was knocked off by Shaler Area in its opening game of a Seneca Valley holiday tournament. Games resume today for each boys basketball team.
Freshman Trio Lead Wolverines Over Moniteau
A Wolverine trio of freshmen guards combined to score 36 points to lead Ellwood City to a non-conference victory over Moniteau on Thursday.
Freshman Steve Antuono’s 22 points propelled the Wolverines to its 58-46 victory as he was backed by fellow freshmen guards Milo Sesti (8 points) and Alexander Roth (6 points)
Ellwood City led 28-17 at the end of the first half after a strong 20-5 run. The Wolverines cemented the victory late in the game, putting 17 points on the board in the fourth quarter on the strength of a 10-0 run.
Antuono was successful from the field, making 58% (7-for-12) of shots attempted as well as 75% (3-for-4) of threes attempted. He also shot well from the line, making 56% (5-for-9) of free throws attempted.
Senior Rocco Sesti (8 points, 3 rebounds) and Rick Pitrelli (5 points, 12 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals) also contributed to the victory that snapped a 5-game losing streak.
Ellwood City (2-6 overall) will next play Fort LeBoeuf at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the championship game of the Mercer holiday tournament.
Shaler Uses Balanced Scoring To Defeat Riverside
Shaler Area had five players score in double figures on Thursday led by Mekhi Reynolds (15 points), B.B. Fugh (13), Nick Rispoli (13), Justin DeSabato (11), and Colton Schott (11) on their way to defeating Riverside 75-47.
The Panthers held a slim 2-point lead after one quarter in the non-conference affair, but the Class 5-A Shaler Titans (7-1 overall) used a 29 point second quarter to rally to a 43-24 halftime advantage.
Riverside will next play Brashear in the consolation game of the Seneca Valley holiday tournament.
