If data metrics can be measured with pieces of pie, approximatley 750 people showed up to watch the Lincoln High School Blue Band perform their 2018 pre-game and halftime perfromances last night at Helling Stadium in Ewing Park. The band performed its traditional pregame set list consisting of the drumline’s cadence, the Lincoln High School alma mater, the “Star Spangled Banner”, and “Fanfare” – a tribute to our U.S. military. The halftime show featured songs such as “Paint it Black”, “ Mr Roboto”, and “Bad Romance”.
The band wore their brand new uniforms for the first time. The uniforms’ design was a collaborative effort involving student, band director, administration, and school board member input. The dazzling white pant leg stripe with gold highlights stood out as the high-stepping band crossed the Helling Stadium field. The Blue Band is one of only a few in Western Pennsylvania that still incorporate the high-stepping, “Big Ten” style of marching.
In addition to the introduction of the Blue Band, the festival also included the recognition of the fall sports rsoters for each team competing this season. Lincoln High School fall sports football, cross country, volleyball, golf, tennis, and soccer were all recognized on the field with players and coaches being introduced individually as they took the field. The cheerleaders were also introduced and performed several cheers and an acrobatic, high-flying routine set to music. All players wore their uniform shirts as each were introduced to the crowd.
“Judging from the positive comments from those in attendance, the incredible weather, and the overall interest in the kids’ fall activities, I would say that the night was a huge success,” said Blue Band Booster President, Holly Angelucci. Angelucci also praised the coaches and band directors for their support and dedication to the players. “It’s a big undertaking, but it is such a great way for us all to highlight the talent and dedication of our sudents and staff.”
Blue Band director, Lee Caldwell echoed Angelucci’s comments. “The students and players worked hard all summer to be ready for their performances and game play. It’s that level of commitment and effort that makes Ellwood City such a great place.”
Special thanks was given to public address announcer, Frank Keally, as well as Sweet Caroline’s for participating with a special fundraiser.
For community members who were not able to make the annual Pie Festival, the first home football game is Friday, August 31 at 7 p.m. at Helling Stadium against Serra Catholic.
