I wanted to ask for a moment of your time to let you know of some of the great things happening at our station this year. As you know from past talks we are dedicated to preserving rail history and our historic building. This year we finally got our roof replaced, with help from the Hoyt Foundation! This is so exciting because now we can start a real restoration project… Well we could if we had a million dollars. BUT we can restore it in some small ways back to the original beauty, and keep hoping for that million dollars!
Once the roof was replaced and the weather broke we starting working on what we call our display track. This is called a display track because we hope to display not only our restored N5C caboose but also our Speeder car once it has been rebuilt and our Brookville Engine Car.
We recently purchased through member donations a building to store this ONE AND ONLY ENGINE. That’s right it is the only Brookville of its kind left in existence and it is in West Pittsburg, PA. We have spent 14 years restoring it and its beautiful.
Our next task is to raise funds to bring home our second caboose and to dream of getting our UN Tower back to its proper place. Our most recent addition is a gift from CSX. They recently replaced the train signal by the station and were generous enough to donate the old B&O signal to our museum.
We have been having fundraiser festivals to raise money to help with the UN Tower move and the station upkeep. As you know we had one in May and it rained; but even in the rain we hosted a classic car cruise, a touch a truck event, and 35 vendors selling beautiful crafts and some direct sale items such as Tupperware, and LulaRoe. We had two local restaurants and Dillow’s Concessions on the grounds.
We estimate 500 to 600 people attended, doesn’t sound like a lot but for us, a grass roots organization we were happy. This also helped us be able to start work on the women’s waiting room at the station, yes in 1907 the ladies were expected to wait in a separate waiting area at the station.
Our true hope is that you will join us for our next fundraiser. Saturday August 25, 2018 from 10 am – 6pm at the West Pittsburg Train Station. We have a Car and Motorcycle Cruise-In planned and we are happy to have the support of Tony Cooper and the Rapid Tappets.
We are hosting New Castle Playhouse Mini-stars at noon, and a Magician in the afternoon. West Pittsburg’s very own Joey Lynn Tomko will be set up HOOPING with the kids until 2:00. We have inflatables and a dunk tank, and corn-hole and horseshoes as well. We have 10 local food vendors confirmed this time! Pizza Man Pizza, Tuscany Square, Elham’s and Pita, Rollin Smoke BBQ, Litrenta Italian foods, Kettle Corn Dan, Dillow’s Fair Food, and New Castle’s “Ice Cream Truck” and possibly a pastry bakery offering homemade donuts!
As if this is not enough DON’T forget you can shop until you drop at our local craft booths and enjoy artisan’s wares from local and afar. We have 40 vendors confirmed. To name just a few direct sale vendors there is Norwex, Tupperware, LulaRoe, Damsel in Defense, Vantel Pearls, Pet Treats and many more. We will enjoy music from Josh, and face painting by Mariha as well.
We are honored to have the Hi-Railer Model Train Railroaders attend with a display and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Admission is $3.00 for adults or $5.00 a couple. Children under 12 are free. If you want to register your classic car or bike for a chance to win a $100.00 Lowe’s gift card a car and car load of people is $10.00 and you will receive a dash plaque and a goodie bag if you are within the first 50 to register. As if this is not enough, we will have great event T-shirts, and a large Chinese Auction supplied by our vendors.
