LGNDS a new Barbershop on Lawrence Avenue had their soft opening Friday. Carla Bunney and Shawn Johnson Jr. are the co-owners and partners of the new local barbershop.
The dream of having a barbershop started long ago when both Bunney and Johnson were working for Youngs Barbershop. They found that they wanted to branch out and start their own business, they wanted to do things their own way and they wanted to work for themselves.
“People get in this business because they want to do their own thing,” Johnson said. “When you work for someone for a long time, you kind of figure out the way you like to do things and the way you like to operate. Bunney and I have a lot in common in the way we would like to run a business.”
The two started looking for the perfect location for their barbershop, they originally wanted to stay outside of Ellwood City so they wouldn’t step on the toes of other business and they wouldn’t be competing against their previous employer Youngs.
“We are both from Ellwood but we wanted to find the right place. We looked all over in Beaver and Lawrence County, but couldn’t find a place that seemed right,” Johnson said. “It was weird, we were so set on being somewhere else and everything kept drawing us back to Ellwood. One day we finally decide that Ellwood is where we wanted to be, it’s our hometown, its where our family and friends are and that is where we should be.”
There will be no shortage of friendly faces and fun at the new shop the two owners plan to make the atmosphere inviting and homey.
“I have been in the business for 20 years, and I have found It’s always best to create a family atmosphere where everyone feels valued and welcomed no matter what age you are,” Bunney said. “We just want everyone to feel welcome and to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.”
LGNDS will specialize in men’s cutting, beards, shaving, straight razor, advanced men’s haircutting and specialized cuts that people can’t get in a salon.
“The industry is constantly moving and evolving. We are always looking at what is new and what are the new trends,” Johnson said. “We look at different classes and we are always searching for new information, we want to continue our education and continue building our brand.”
LGNDS plans to have a grand opening ceremony within the next few weeks. People can find them on their Facebook Page and people can also book appointments on their website, or walk-in. The hours of business are Tuesday through Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. walk-ins.
