HARRISBURG – Furthering his opportunities to be involved in shaping some of the most critical fiscal issues facing the Commonwealth, State Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Beaver/Butler/Lawrence) Tuesday was appointed by House Speaker Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) to replace outgoing state Rep. Jim Christiana (R-Beaver/Washington) on one of the General Assembly’s most influential watchdog committees.
The Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) is a bipartisan, bicameral legislative service agency tasked with making research-supported recommendations for the elimination of wasteful expenditures and promotion of economic growth, as well as ensuring transparency and accountability in the use of taxpayer dollars.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to focus on new ways to cut spending and highlight the wasteful and ineffective use of tax dollars,” Bernstine said. “I am humbled to be selected to replace Rep. Christiana, who has been an effective advocate for fiscal responsibility and increased transparency.”
The committee conducts studies and research pertaining to the operation and performance of state-funded programs and agencies and investigates a wide range of topics, including health and welfare, transportation, economic development and law enforcement.
Christiana stepped down from the committee Tuesday and recommended Bernstine as his replacement on the committee on which he has served since 2009.
“Rep. Bernstine is committed to responsible budgeting and making sure government is open and accountable to the taxpayers,” Christiana said. “I’m confident this transition will best serve the people of western Pennsylvania long term.”
