Ellwood City Junior High Softball Team Wins Opener 13-2 Over Laurel
The Lady Wolverines spotted the Spartans a 2-0 first inning lead and then stormed back to score 13 unanswered runs at Stiefel Park in the opener for both teams. The game was halted after 5 innings as the mercy rule took effect.
The offense, aided by 10 walks, was led by Kali Barnett. The slick fielding third baseman contributed 2 singles, 3 rbi’s and 2 runs scored. Aliya Garroway doubled, scored twice and drove in a run as well. Jenna Vetica added a single, scored twice, drove in a run and also had two stolen bases. Kyla Servick, Angie Nardone, Mollie Street, and Maddie Hicks all added RBI’s to the cause. Hicks, Servick, Nardone, Grace Balin, Katelyn Wehman, Mollie Street, and Trinity Arlet also scored once for the victors. Servick also swiped a base.
Angie Nardone took the win in the circle as she went 3 innings. She gave up 2 runs with just one being earned. She yielded 3 hits while fanning 2 and walking 1. Garroway hurled the final two innings. She fanned 3 while walking 2 and did not allow a hit.
Defensively, the infield was sharp. Barnett flawlessly handled 3 ground balls and Street made a couple fine backhanded plays on ground balls. First baseman Balin made a terrific scoop to record an out on a throw across the diamond from Barnett. Balin and Garroway were also solid behind the plate.
The team will look to make it 2-0 as they head to Shenango on Wednesday to take on the Wildcats for a 4pm start.
