Betty Popa, 99, of Wampum passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at her residence following an extended illness.
Born February 15, 1918 in Wampum, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Zenovia Toda Pope. She was married to George Popa Jr. who died June 8, 1959.
Betty graduated from Wampum High School and from St. Francis School of Nursing. She worked from 1945 to 1959 as the Nurse Supervisor of the Operating Room at the Ellwood City Hospital. In 1959 until her retirement in 1975, Betty worked as the Industrial Nurse at the Ellwood City Works of US Steel and then from 1975 to 1980 at Babcock and Wilcox as their nurse. Betty was a lifelong member of the Queen of Heaven Parish in Wampum and was active with its Rosary Guild for many years. She was also a member and former secretary of the Wampum AARP. Betty loved to read but her most cherished time was spent with family.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Butera of Wampum, Betty Popa-Schuld and her husband John Schuld of Canfield; and three grandchildren, Robert and Jacqueline Butera, and Juliana Schuld.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael Pope in 1986 and John Pope in 2005, and a sister, Marie Almansan in 1935.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday June 30 from 9:00 to 10:30 am at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main Street Wampum. Following visitation, family and friends will celebrate Betty’s life with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Redeemer Church at 11 am. with Rev. Father Zachary Galiyas officiating. Interment will follow in the Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
