The WPIAL announced their 2017 high school basketball playoffs Tuesday night with three local teams earning a playoff birth. Both Riverside girls and boys squads made the playoff picture along with the Ellwood City boys basketball team.
For the boys in their Class 3A playoff bracket with opening round action on Saturday, Riverside (15-7) squares off against Burgettstown (11-11) at North Allegheny, 3 p.m. while Ellwood City (9-10) plays vs. Washington (18-4) at Peters Township, 3 p.m.
An opening round victory could possibly pit the Panthers against heavyweight Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (17-5 overall) in second round action, while a upset victory by the Wolverines could put them in a second round matchup with Aliquippa (11-11 overall).
It would take two wins by each boys team to dream up a Class 3A semifinal matchup and a third and final meeting between the schools this season.
