Mr. Fred M. Smith, 74, of Ellwood City passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in his residence.
Mr. Smith was born on September 7, 1942 in New Castle to the late Elizabeth Feinstein Slater. He is a member of the Neshannock High School class of 1961. Fred enlisted with the U.S. Navy on March 28, 1962 and served on the USS Page County as a diesel mechanic until his discharge on June 27, 1966. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
Fred had worked at Rockwell in New Castle from 1973 until the plant closed in 1991. He then worked for Good Wheels as a part time driver, and as a Crossing Guard for the Ellwood City Police Department. He enjoyed working on cars, fixing anything mechanical, and watching football.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Toni Schepisi Smith whom he married on September 7, 1968, his sons, Michael Smith, Scott Smith, and Cory Smith all of Ellwood City, his half sister, Nancy (Robert) McCurdy of New Castle, and his half brothers, Terry Slater of Bessemer and Ron Slater of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Mary Miller, his step father Bruster Slater, Sr., and his half brothers, Bruster Slater, Jr. and Gary Slater.
A private Memorial Service for Fred will be held at the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. and Cremation Services. Memorial contributions in Mr. Smith’s name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, or to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
