Entering Monday Night’s rivalry 2.0 game for both Riverside and Ellwood City, the records may have led some to believe Riverside would have an easy time with the Lady Wolverines. But as with any rivalry game, you can throw the records out as Ellwood City (3-7 overall) paced the Panthers (8-2 overall) for the first three frames of action until Riverside used a strong 4th quarter performance at the free throw line to pull away to a 46-37 section victory.
Freshman Marley Wolf collected a game-high 14 points, including all eight of her free throw attempts in the final quarter, to lead the Lady Panthers. Natalie Bologna (12 points) and Sydney Wolf (10 points) also finished in double digits for the victorious Riverside squad. Overall, the Panthers finished 14 of 16 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter alone and 21 for 26 from the strip for the game.
Ellwood City combated the free throw disparity for most for of the game and led for periods of time throughout the game. Ellwood City junior Breonna Streit led all Lady Wolverines scorers with 11 points in defeat. Ellwood City finished the game just four of 12 from the free throw stripe.
The Lady Panthers next travel to play Neshannock while the Lady Wolverines play host to Laurel – both games scheduled for Thursday.
