Former Councilman Pleads Council to Oppose New Water Treatment Plant

With recent incidents involving contaminated water sources all across America, it’s not surprising that former councilman, Ralph Chiappetta, wanted to address his concerns at the Monday council meeting regarding the new water treatment plant that is supposed to be replacing the old one- affecting many Ellwood City residents. His concern with this is that the plant will be supplying water to homes from the Connoquenessing Creek and Beaver River instead of where the water is currently supplied from, the Slippery Rock Creek.

His main concern is that the quality of the newly proposed water sources are less than that of the Slippery Rock Creek water. Over 200,000 pounds of garbage have been taken out of the Connoquenessing Creek from just the past few years.

At the meeting he presented council with a letter:

“To all members of the Ellwood City Borough Council, Ed Leymarie, Bob Villella:

I am asking on behalf of ALL residents of Ellwood City that get their water from PA American Water that you adopt a resolution opposing the proposed water treatment plant that will take water from the Connoquenessing Creek and the Beaver River.

In a letter to the editor by Mr. Glenn Koach, he warns of the upcoming proposed new plant.

I would ask how many sewage treatment plants empty into the Connoquenessing Creek up stream?

Ellwood, Ellport, Zelienople, and Evans City come to mind and there could be more.

The Slippery Rock Creek is much cleaner and needs less chemicals to treat it.

A case in point was a couple years back a pizza shop opened a second location in Zelienople and could not understand why their pizza had a different taste. Only after they brought water in from the original location did they solve the problem.

We are spoiled with good tasting water, coffee, and everything else that we use water for as an ingredient.

Please vehemently oppose the location that they are proposing and work to keep our water coming from the Slippery Rock Creek.

Also, please contact the other municipalities and school districts along with the Ellwood City Hospital and our state representative and state senator to join in and get a site on the Slippery Rock for our drinking water.

Thank you Mr. Koach for bring this to our attention!

Respectfully,

Ralph Chiappetta.”

Updates to follow as they come.

  1. it just keeps getting better and better, cant wait to move, water plant downstream from sewage plant, wake up ellwood

  2. apparently problems from the past were ignored and the cost of complete repairs would bankrupt the town….

    • What are you talking about? The Water Company is not owned by the boro. It is owned by a a large corporation which also happens to own plants in New Castle, Butler and other parts of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Most likely, they want to consolidate their plants in Lawrence County and have one modern plant to provide services to the whole county.
