Cayla Renee Sudano will use the Lincoln High School Class of 1957 scholarship to continue her education, with the goal of becoming an oncologist at the University of Pittsburgh where she will begin classes Aug. 29 and major in biology/pre-medicine.
Announcement of the award was made by James Meehan, 1957 class president, during Lincoln’s 55th annual senior class recognition assembly where he noted the class has given more than $40,000 in scholarships in the past eight years.
Cayla ranks third and was recognized as one of eight high honor graduates in the 115-member 2016 Lincoln graduating class. She also received four other financial awards: Turner Community Development Foundation Scholarship, Howell and Lois Williams Memorial Scholarship for English and Science, Crisci Memorial Scholarship and a $1,000 Wolves Club Scholarship.
She resides at 228 Hazel Ave. with her father, Rob Sudano, her 15-year old sister Jadyn, and her great-grandmother Dorothy Sudano. She is also a daughter of Renee Sudano of Ore Street.
A two-year National Honor Society member, Cayla is a four-year recipient of the president’s award for academic excellence and high honor award for her academic record. She has been in the gifted enrichment program, received the Lawrence County American Legion leadership award and was chosen to the five-member Arrow leadership team at Lincoln.
Her list of school and community involvement is extensive as she has been on the Senior High Student Council executive board for four years, was a council mentor for seventh graders, is a three-year member and two-year historian of the marching and concert bands, served as class secretary in 10th grade, belonged to Y-Teens for two years and was dance co-chairman, took part in March of Dimes two years, and was in Spanish Club for one year.
She was on the girls cross country team for three years and was involved in girls soccer for 11 years, playing on cup and recreational teams and one year on a district team.
Cayla volunteered at the Holy Redeemer Bazaar, working in the kitchen for three years, has been a three-year volunteer with Relay for Life and with the children’s ministry at Champion Life Church where she spent three years as a youth leader for middle school students. She also worked two years in the Tiger Paws program to beautify the Beaver Falls area, in trash cleanup at Blackhawk High School with Champion Life Church and as a student council participant in Earth Day cleanup.
She is also a child care aide at Pipsqueak’s Day Care where she has worked for a year and a half.
The initial recipient of the 1957 class $5,000 award was Josh Court in 2009. He was followed by Brooke Ewing, Josh Guisler, Charity Stoll, Taylor Gearhart, Hunter Kline and Marina Thetford.
