The Stiefel Hockey League is seeking donations from local businesses to cover the cost of constructing boards for the community hockey rink in Stiefel Park. Businesses that donate a minimum of $100 will have their name displayed on a sign outside of the rink listing sponsors. The boards are built by the league’s hockey players.
Earlier this spring, the Ellwood City Borough Council repaved the rink. However, the siding had deteriorated and needed completely replaced. League associate fundraiser Francis Todorich emphasized that the rink is for the entire community, and the members have spent several days a week working on the rink to prepare for the summer season.
The Stiefel Hockey League began in 1999 and is now run by Caleb Cragle, who was involved from the beginning. Cragle said membership ranges from high school students to adults and the league is typically able to form several teams, usually with two divisions based on skill level. Membership ranges from Beaver and Rochester to Cranberry Township.
“Many people are unaware that Ellwood has had a viable hockey league for almost two decades,” Cragle said.
Cragle thanked Krummert Automotive and Mr. Pipes for sponsorship and labor on the rink and encouraged more businesses and individuals to become involved in the community hockey rink.
Anyone wishing to join the league may register for the summer season, beginning June 12, by contacting Cragle at 724-971-0311.
