Last week, the Lady Wolverines were trounced 15-0 in three innings by the North Hills Indians. On Tuesday evening, the junior high ladies fought hard for seven innings before falling short by a final score of 7-1. This was the third straight game in which the young team has been competitive against a Class AAAA foe that had previously mercy ruled them.
The offense put the ball in play, the defense was solid and the pitching continued to improve. Sydni Haswell led the six hit attack with two singles and an RBI. Madi Krugh singled and scored. Maura Agostinelli, Olivia Battaglia and Chloe Sturgeon provided the other three singles to the cause.
Outfielders Haswell, Battaglia, Sturgeon and Alex Johnston all made nice catches on fly balls while infielders Stormy Fiello and Isabella Roth did the same on two popups.
Pitcher Madi Krugh had the best performance of her young career. The tall, lanky lefthander walked just three batters in seven innings of work. She gave up 10 hits and struck out five. Of the seven runs, just four were earned.
The team will look to get their first victory of the season on Thursday afternoon as North Allegheny visits Stiefel Park for a 4 p.m. start.
