Becoming a published author is no easy feat, and there are over 30 published authors in the Ellwood area. To honor these individual and celebrate local literary culture, the Ellwood City Area Public Library will host an author fair this Friday, April 29.
Write On, organized by the Ellwood City Library 100th Anniversary Committee, will showcase 22 local authors. The committee identified over 30 authors, but not all were able to attend. The committee, which was created last year to celebrate the library’s centennial, stayed together to continue organizing events.
“It’s a wonderful number for a first time out,” Veronica Pacella, the library director, said. “Many of the authors grew up in this area and learned to love reading at the library, so it’s a way to bring them full circle.”
On Friday, the library will close at 3 p.m. instead of 4 in order to prepare the set ups. Each author will have a large poster printed by the Color Center, a short author bio and a table display where visitors may meet and greet the author and possibly purchase a book.
Write On runs from 6 to 9 p.m. The entrance fee is $10, and all proceeds benefit library programs. Tickets may be purchased at the library. Refreshments will also be available.
The attending authors ran the gamut from general fiction, science fiction, young adult, nonfiction, children’s book and cook books. Some of the nonfiction books are locally oriented, such as Then and Now Vol. 1 & 2 by Mark Barnes, two books showing old and new photographs of key spots in the Ellwood area.
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to help out the library and get local exposure,” Eric Poole, author of the military history book Company of Heroes, said. Company of Heroes, published by Osprey Publishing, tells the story of Leslie Sabo, an Ellwood resident who earned the Medal of Honor decades after being killed in action in the Vietnam War.
The event will primarily be a meet and greet, providing an opportunity to meet local authors, re-connect with old colleagues and celebrate writing.
“Write-On is an excellent way for fellow authors and Ellwood residents to collaborate and share the literature they love and stories they’ve created,” Stephani Damato, an indie fantasy, said.
“Just to finish a book and publish it is a remarkable feat,” Jonathan Cortez, an indie science fiction author, said. “It’s wonderful that the library has put together an event to celebrate and give exposure to the author community.”
Write On is the first of a planned annual series celebrating the arts. Future ideas include showcases for studio art, dramatic arts and music.
