After four straight lopsided losses, the Lady Wolverines showed significant improvement as they battled Seneca Valley Tuesday afternoon. After walking 10 batters in the first two innings and spotting the Raiders a 6-0 lead, the young pitching staff led by Madi Krugh, yielded just one more free pass and two additional runs over the final four frames.
In addition to Krugh’s control on the mound, the defense played solid and sometimes spectacularly as they did not commit an error. The offense put the ball in play to the tune of eight hits, six runs scored, fix stolen bases and battled back to tie the game at six in the fifth inning.
Shortstop Stormy Fiello handled three ground balls and two popups flawlessly while center fielder Chloe Sturgeon made a tremendous catch on a line drive in the left center field gap to rob a Seneca Valley hitter of extra bases.
The duo of third baseman Zoe Maine and first baseman Isabella Roth ended the sixth inning with a fabulous double play as Maine snared a line drive and Roth bare handed the throw back to first. Strong armed catcher Maria Ioanilli gunned down a runner attempting to steal second and picked off a runner at first base
Offensively, five different players contributed to the eight hit attack. Taylor Covert had two singles, an RBI and scored a run. Maura Agostinelli got the offense started with a three-run single in the third inning. Madi Krugh added two singles and scored once. Roth singled and scored twice. Ioanilli laced a double into left center to lead off the seventh and also drove in a run. Sydni Haswell added a single. Fleet footed pinch runner Olivia Battaglia stole second and came all the way around to score when the throw got past the center fielder.
Roth took the loss in the circle as she pitched the first two innings. Krugh came on in relief and finished the game. She issued just two walks, four hits, and struck out a batter over the final four frames.
The team, now 0-5 on the season, will look to get better and secure their first win as Shaler comes to town on Thursday. First pitch at Stiefel Park will be at 6 p.m.
