Lois I. McCandless, 86, of Lowell, MI, formerly of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, April 5, 2016 at Green Acres of Lowell, MI.
She was born in Ellwood City on April 28, 1929 to the late Clyde L. Brewer and the late Madge Anderson Brewer. She married her husband of nearly 60 years, Alvin Dale McCandless in 1952. He preceded her in death on June 2, 2011. She was a registered nurse, having graduated from the Beaver Valley General Hospital nursing program and worked at the Ellwood City Hospital. She did private duty nursing after moving to Michigan. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Junior Women’s Club while living in Ellwood. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellwood, the Cross of Christ Church in Petoskey, MI, and Zion Lutheran Church in Wooster, OH. She became a member of Beta Sigma Phi, an international social/philanthropical sorority after moving to Charlevoix. Her hobbies and interests were numerous and varied, but her favorites were sewing, gardening and traveling with her husband
In addition to her parents and husband, Lois was preceded in death by her sister, Martha Brewer Hoskins.
She is survived by her daughter, Darcy McCandless of Grand Rapids, MI, her son Curtis McCandless of Clinton, MI, her grandsons, Leland McCandless (and fiancé Kristina Ritz) of Arlington, OH and Cole McCandless of Clinton, MI,, and her brother, C. Richard Brewer of High Point, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 6-8 P.M. on Friday, April 8, 2016 in the TURNER FUNERAL HOME of Ellwood City, Sixth Street at Park Avenue.
Friends may also call from 1 P.M. until the time of service at 3 P.M. on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at TURNER’S with the Rev. Peggy Suhr-Barkley, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery, Wayne Township.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in Lois’ name to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
