Mayor Anthony Court wants to remind residents about an on-going scam that the US Department of Treasury has been warning taxpayers to be on high alert for.
Some Ellwood City residents have called the Mayor’s office to let him know that they have received this type of phone call, telling them they need to pay their back taxes immediately or they will be arrested. These individuals are targeting our elderly, trying to frighten them into paying immediately.
Please pay attention to the elderly in our area, so that they do not fall victim to this phone scam. Remind everyone, especially our elderly that if they get a call from the IRS or any government entity, asking for money to pay back taxes or threatening their arrest if they do not pay up, to hang up and do not respond to them until they talk to a relative, or the police to see if it is a real call or a scam.
The Treasury Inspector General’s Office said that the IRS will generally make contact with people by mail, and not by phone for unpaid taxes and they do not ask for a credit card number over the phone. Please don’t let your family members or friends and neighbors fall victim to this scam.
