With the winter sports season is in full swing, Ellwoodcity.org continues its tradition of interviewing senior athletes. This year, Ellwood’s basketball teams are both senior heavy, creating an experienced and closely bonded group of athletes.
Below are Q&A’s taken from the preseason with two seniors from girls basketball, two from boys and one wrestler. Check back throughout the season for game stats and summaries and athlete spotlights.
Girls Basketball
Karington Ketterer
Parents: Laura and Jeff Ketterer
Years Played: Since 3rd grade
What are you looking forward to about the season?
We’re hoping to advance to playoffs again.
How do you hope to improve this year?
We need to work better as a team and have more contributors.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned through this sport?
The amount of time you put into something is worth the effort.
What will you miss about it after graduation?
All of my friends.
Future plans: Basketball at Pitt Johnston and studying to be a physical therapist.
Emily Brown
Parents: Ed and Carol
Years played: since 4th grade
What has your favorite memory been?
Making playoffs last year.
What are you looking forward to this season?
We have a great team and I will enjoy playing with them.
What have you and the team been doing to prepare?
We’ve been doing a lot of training outside of the gym.
How do you hope to improve this year?
To have the team work together well and end the season with a better record.
Are there any tough opponents this season?
Blackhawk, Beaver, Ambridge and Hopewell.
What will you miss about it after graduation?
The family bond on the team.
Future plans: I will be attending Kent State to study education.
Boys Basketball
Rickey Roth
Parents: Rick and Denise Roth
Years played: since 3rd grade
What has your favorite memory been?
The rivalry games with Riverside.
What are you looking forward to about the upcoming season?
Winning.
What have you and the team been doing to prepare?
We’ve been doing a lot of conditioning.
How do you hope to improve this year?
Win more games.
Are there any tough opponents this season?
Beaver Falls and New Castle.
What will you miss?
Spending time with teammates.
Future plans: Attend a four year college.
Brady Kosior
Parents: James Kosior and Kim Carangi
Years played: 2nd grade
What has your favorite memory been?
The 9th grade championship.
What are you looking forward to most?
We are shooting for a playoff run this season.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned?
Discipline and teamwork.
What will you miss about it after graduation?
Playing with my brother.
Future plans: Attending a four year college.
Nino Greco
Parents: Sherri and John Greco
Years played: since 2nd grade
What has your favorite memory been?
When I was a freshmen, my brother was a senior and my sister was a cheerleader. It was fun to have everybody at the games.
How do you hope you will improve this year?
The whole team has been working hard to reach our playoff goals.
Future plans: Police officer.
Wrestling
Christian Kerr
Parents: Bridgette Kerr
Years played: Five
What has your favorite memory been?
Going to Mike Sinclair’s house after meets.
What are you looking forward to most about the upcoming season?
Doing the best I can and fishing strong and being a good example for future leaders.
What have you and the team been doing to prepare for your first match?
Drilling and going through live situations.
How do you hope you will improve this year?
I hope to win as many matches as I can and exceed my expectations.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned through this sport?
Keep your head held high no matter what.
What will you miss about it after graduation?
The team unity. We’re all friends.
Future plans: Engineering. I’m thinking about attending Penn State.
