Riverside and Ellwood City clashed in a high-scoring game last night at Riverside High School. Both teams were locked in an evenly-matched struggle which remained undecided until the last two seconds with a steal and two point shot by Riverside. The game ended 71-69 with the Wolverines returning home in dismay.
The second quarter ended 35-34, with Riverside leading. The second half of the game saw Ellwood take the lead only to gradually lose it. Ellwood scored 18 to Riverside’s 12 in the third quarter. However, the Panthers counterattacked in the fourth quarter. Led by junior guard Dylan Speicher, who scored 10 points in the final quarter, Riverside closed the deficit and tied the game.
Following a foul, the Wolverines inbounded on their half of the court with the intention of securing the game. Speicher had other intentions. He stole the ball from sophomore Anthony Roth, raced to his side of the court and made the game-winning shot with 2.1 seconds on the clock.
Both teams had no shortage of successful shots. Although only four Wolverines scored, all were in the double digits. Anthony Roth was the overall high scorer with 29 points, including seven three-pointers. Seniors Ricky Roth had 19, Nino Greco, 11, and Nick Ioanilli, 10.
The Panthers had a more even distribution of points although Speicher scored 23 points, almost a third of the team’s total. Junior Justin Baust was second with 17 points. In addition, Speicher made five three-point shots and Baust, three.
Also scoring for the Panthers were Jesse Fornatero, nine, Jason Dambach, six, Ty Thellman, five, Austin Dambach, four, Mike Boswell, four, Will Yasenka, two, and Tyler Squiequero, one.
Riverside is now 3-2 and travels to Neshannock in a section game tomorrow. Ellwood City is now 4-2 and hosts Beaver Falls in a section game tomorrow. Ellwood lost to Beaver Falls at the tip off tournament 78-35.
