The New Castle Lyric Opera, in collaboration with Opera Westminster, will present the premiere performance of the pop opera “Katharina von Bora” on November 7th.
The opera was composed by Mihai Valcu, resident opera conductor at Westminster College, with a libretto by William Zeiger. It will be performed in English. The cast includes both Westminster students and talented vocalists from the region.
Katharina von Bora, a former nun who became the wife of Martin Luther, was an important figure in the early history of the Protestant Church. She was a primary source of inspiration and support for her husband, and helped to put the early church on a firm financial footing. While Luther was a visionary with ground-breaking religious ideas, Katharina was a talented and energetic realist who worked to create a strong foundation for the church.
The three-act opera was created to commemorate Katharina’s role in the history of the Reformation, and to honor the upcoming 500-year anniversary of the founding of the Lutheran church.
Inspirational and based on fact, this production of “Katharina von Bora” is not to be missed!
It will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 7th, in Orr Auditorium on the Westminster College campus. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 each. However, please purchase them in advance if you can, by calling New Castle Lyric Opera at 724-714-3003. There is a special rate for groups of ten or more.
