On Monday evening, the Ellwood City and Riverside softball teams met at Riverside High School for the rivalry showdown. The close game ended with the Lady Wolverines pulling ahead of the Lady Panthers and winning 3-1.
It was Ellwood’s first real fight of the season, as the combined score for their first four games is 35-2. Both teams had gone about a week without a game due to weather.
Ellwood’s Allie McKelvey got the first run of the game in the first inning. Afterward, the game stalemated until McKelvey got another run, batted in by Summer Maine, in the fifth inning.
Skyla Greco struck out 13 Lady Panthers, keeping Riverside from scoring until the sixth inning, when Logan Snyder hit an RBI. To top the win, Ellwood’s Megan Siegfried batted in Lauren Stiles in the final inning.
“It was good to go out to Riverside and get the win, especially against a team like Riverside,” Coach Gary Rozanski said. “They are well coached and competitive.”
The Lady Wolverines are now 5-0 and travel to New Brighton today. The Lady Panthers are 2-3 and host Mohawk today.
