PHOTOS: Ellwood City Notches Victory Over Rival Riverside

The Ellwood City Wolverines withstood a late comeback from rival Riverside Friday night, but held on and came out victorious with a 51-48 victory. In front of a capacity crowd at the Panther gymnasium, the Wolverines took a second quarter lead and never relinquished the lead through an fast-paced final quarter. Ellwood City saw its largest lead in the third quarter when an 11-0 scoring run – aided by eight Riverside turnovers – pushed their lead to 38-27. Old Photo Friday: Tornado Rips Through Ellwood in 1985

Do you remember when the tornado ripped through Ellwood City, causing damage to homes, businesses, landscape and automobiles in 1985? The tornado, which touched down Friday May 31st 1985, affected numerous businesses and residences surrounding Ellwood City in Big Beaver Borough, North Sewickley Township, Marion Township, and on into southern Butler County. Old Photo Friday: Borough Property Nativity Scene

Although the photos are not very old, they are certainly a thing of the past after a Wisconsin-based anti-religion group threatened to sue the Borough of Ellwood City in 2011 if they didn’t take down the traditional nativity display, which has since been absent from the property. The group, Freedom From Religion Foundation, promotes nontheism and defends the constitutional separation between religion and government, their website states. The last year the nativity was standing on Borough property was in 2011, after the council members voted 4-2 in favor of removing the scene from municipal property beginning in 2012. A council…

You either love it or you hate it, but regardless of how you feel about the snow there’s no denying it has blanketed Ellwood City overnight. Last year during December we had hardly any snow and the average temperatures were in the 50’s and upwards. Despite this year’s snow, there are many townspeople out and about, some cleaning their cars off and others going in and out of the stores on Lawrence Avenue. PHOTOS: Gingerbread House Contest

If you haven’t seen the gingerbread houses made by the stylists at Shear Paradise Salon on Lawrence Avenue, you’re missing out! There are four gingerbread houses on display, each one designed completely by the stylists. The public gets to choose which house they like the best by casting their vote inside the salon, and the winner receives a gift card. Voting ends the Saturday before Christmas – get down there and cast your vote, you’ll know you’re at the right place when you see the darling Rudolf display in the window! This weekend, the streets of Ellwood City were packed full of festive families welcoming the Christmas season! The Chamber of Commerce did a great job organizing all of the events, which included Light Up Night, Christmas in the Park, and a Christmas parade. SPOILER ALERT: House Tour Home Features Christmas Village Above Kitchen Cabinets

Decorated and ready for this weekend’s Ellwood City Municipal Woman’s House Tour is the DeSanzo house, located at 417 Hazel Ave. The home features several Christmas trees, mangers, and a Christmas village set up above the cabinets – to name just a few iconic decorations! Homeowner, Joseph DeSanzo said it takes on average 10 hours to decorate the home with the majority of time taken up by the Christmas village set up. A gallery of the decorations is posted below.
