PHOTOS: Ellwood Softball Senior Night Cut Short By Rain

Thursday evening’s Ellwood City softball contest was called due to rain in the top of the second inning with the Wolverines leading 1-0 over Beaver Falls.  Senior Breonna Streit led off with a base hit and scored on an RBI single by Maria Ioanilli to give the Wolverines the early lead. Madi Krugh struck out two Tigers in her 1 1/3 innings before the rain forced the delay and cancellation. The Lady Wolverines (5-4 overall) are next scheduled for road contest next week, first at Hopewell on Wednesday, May 9th, and later traveling to New Castle on Thursday, May 10th. …

PHOTOS: Panthers Run Away From Wolverines Late In 8-2 Victory

Riverside used late scoring outbursts to help easily dispatched Ellwood City 8-2 on Monday afternoon at Sanders Field in Ewing Park. The visiting Panthers (11-1 overall) put up four runs in the sixth and another four runs in the final frame after the Wolverines chipped into the lead. Riverside’s offense in the seventh came from singles by Drew Speicher, Ethan Ziegler, and Ben Hughes and a sac fly by Ty Thellman. Gunnar Boehm was the winning pitcher for Riverside. PHOTOS: Big Second Inning Propels Lady Wolverines To Victory Over Riverside

Two Ellwood City homers led to an eight run outburst in the second inning that propelled the Lady Wolverines past visiting Riverside 15-2 in varsity softball action. Breonna Streit, Maura Agostinelli, Makinley Magill, Anna Ferrucci, Maria Ioanilli, and Zoe Kalantzis all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.  Ellwood City added on six more runs in the third inning. This week’s Old Photo Friday, courtesy of the Ellwood City Historical Society is Chairman of the revenue division Paul Laurell (left) and Boyd McDowell of McDowell’s Hotel (right), May 10, 1967, counting souvenir Diamond Jubilee coins. The coins were manufactured and used to help publicize the Diamond Jubilee celebration. Ellwood City was founded 1892 and celebrated their 75th anniversary with a series of events throughout the summer of 1967 named the Diamond Jubuilee. The summer featured a street carnival, a grand ball, various church services, musical concerts, fireworks displays and several parades. People were able to obtain the souvenir coins…

Ellwood City Community Enrichment hosted Lawrence County’s  annual Earth Day celebration on Saturday April 21 at Ewing Park.  There was food, vendors, activities, local entertainment, education exhibits and a horse-drawn carriage rides along with a special presentation by Wild World Animals. PHOTOS: Four RBI Day for Mittler Leads Wolverines Rout Over Riverside

Four runs batted in from Reagan Mittler helped lead Wolverines past Riverside in a 20-5 rout on Saturday. Mittler drove in runs on a single in the first and a double in the second. The Wolverines (3-2 overall) fired up the offense in the first inning, when Anna Ferrucci singled scoring the game’s first run.  Ellwood City scored in every inning thereafter including a 9-run outburst in the second frame. Gunnar Boehm’s five-RBI outburst sealed the deal in Riverside’s 11-1 mercy rule victory over Ellwood City on Friday afternoon at Dan Oliastro Field. Boehm showed timely hitting on Friday, driving in five runs on only two hits including the grand slam in the pivotal, 7-run 4th inning to lead Riverside. Boehm also doubled in a run in the sixth. Six members of the Pittsburgh Steelers basketball squad took the court Wednesday night at 8pm against the Lincoln Caring Team.  Steeler players included notable former players Charlie Batch and Louis Lipps along with 2017 3rd round pick Cam Sutton who put on a show for the capacity crowd.
