When I first started out in politics, I naively believed that anyone getting into public service must want to help others. As lawmakers, we are tasked with putting forth policies that support the average Pennsylvanian and building a Commonwealth where anyone can thrive. John D. Bender, 83, of East Palestine, OH peacefully passed away at home on Sunday, September 17, 2023, following a brief illness. John was born in Ellwood City, PA on August 17, 1940, to the late John and Eleanor Bender. Smiley, Wolverines Defeat Freedom 34-14, Improve Record to 3-1

Chris Smiley threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines to a 34-14 victory over Freedom Friday Night at Helling Stadium. The section victory improved the surging Wolverines record to 3-1 on the season – already eclipsing their win total from last year. On Friday, the junior quarterback hooked up with Michael Walters on two touchdown strikes as part of his aerial performance to pace the Ellwood City offense. Short of Playoffs, Ellwood City Golf Next Eyes Section Qualifiers

With its eyes on collecting a playoff berth, the Ellwood City Golf team suffered two section defeats this week and next will eye section qualifiers on Monday at Del Mar Golf Course. After defeating rival Riverside on Monday, the Wolverines fell 213-220 to Shenango at Sylvan Heights Golf Course on Wednesday and were knocked out of the playoff contention Thursday after suffering a 199-212 home course defeat at the hands of undefeated section leader Neshannock. POLICE: Weekly Police Blotter

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF: Domenico Logalbo, 73, of New Castle, is charged with Criminal Mischief after police witnessed Logalbo through surveillance cameras using spray paint to paint property lines on the property of the Borough of Ellwood City on August 19th. According to a criminal complaint, Logalbo has complained multiple times that the borough property is his and that lawyers had advised him that it is not his property. PHOTOS: Wolverines Run Away From Carlynton Late, Earn 25-12 Victory

Ellwood City used a 17-yard fourth quarter touchdown run by running back Elijah Palmer-McCane to break at 12-12 tie and lead the Wolverines to its 25-12 victory over Carlynton Friday night at Helling Stadium. Palmer-McCane rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on the evening as the Wolverines collected over 200 yards on the ground rushing as a team.
