PHOTOS: Riverside retains “Riv-Ell” Cup as Panthers defeat Wolverines on Senior Night

The game of football has three phases: offense, defense, and special teams. Under each phase is a sub-phase that contributes to a victory, such as passing, rushing, turnovers, tackling, kicking, and punting. All these and more were won by the Panthers of Riverside in a one-sided, full dominant 40-0 victory Friday night. In a game where the Wolverines had 46 offensive plays, but only 10 total yards of offense on the evening, the Quips proved they have sole possession of the Beaver Valley Conference and is the team to beat in the BVC after putting a 32-0 victory on the board over Ellwood City The first quarter was dominated by the Quips offensive yardage as the Quips held the Wolverines to negative yardage. However, the Quips did not get on the…

Back-to-back: Lady Wolverines Dominant in WPIAL Repeat

Elwood City’s softball team has been a dominant force over WPIAL opponents in recent years, as it carried a carried a 37-game winning streak against such foes into Wednesday’s Class 3A championship game. That dominance continued as the Wolverines scored a convincing 10-0 victory in five innings against Deer Lakes at California University’s Lilley Field. To get that win, the Wolverines (18-0) had to be extremely patient. A rain delay of about 90 minutes during the Class 6A game caused the 3A title tilt to start a little more than 2 1/2 hours after originally scheduled. No problem for the…

Back-to-back: Riverside defends WPIAL throne, collects 3A Championship

Last year, it took nine innings and only one run to give the Riverside Panthers the Class AA crown with a 1-0 win over Neshannock. In 2017, it was a new class and opponent but the end result was still the same as the Panthers cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Mount Pleasant Vikings at Wild Things Park to take the 3A baseball trophy back to North Sewickley Township. It is the fifth WPIAL title for Dan Oliastro’s team, he has racked up four state titles as well in an amazing 49 year career. Christian Cicchinelli was the winning…
