NWS Provides Details of Two Confirmed EF-1 Tornadoes

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has confirmed two tornadoes touched down during the volatile weather this past Thursday evening in our area. According to the NWS report, a EF-1 tornado laid a roughly 2 mile path in New Galilee while a second EF-1 tornado laid a 2.62 mile path in Franklin Township. Both tornadoes had estimated max wind speeds of 90 MPH. The first tornado, recorded at 6:56 p.m. was confined along either side of Fairlane Boulevard/State Route 351 in New Galilee. Temperatures to Rise, Fall

This week has been much warmer than last, and by Saturday we should be seeing temperatures into the 50’s. Unfortunately the mild temperatures will not last; according to the Weather Channel, Friday will see a high of 51 degrees, Saturday back down to a high of 21, and Sunday with a high of 18. Do you remember when the tornado ripped through Ellwood City, causing damage to homes, businesses, landscape and automobiles in 1985? The tornado, which touched down Friday May 31st 1985, affected numerous businesses and residences surrounding Ellwood City in Big Beaver Borough, North Sewickley Township, Marion Township, and on into southern Butler County. As if today isn’t already cold enough, the temperatures are supposed to drop this weekend just in time to welcome the New Year, with lows expected to be just above the negatives. Several Arctic Blasts are affecting the temperatures throughout the Midwest and North East United States, causing near-record breaking lows. You either love it or you hate it, but regardless of how you feel about the snow there’s no denying it has blanketed Ellwood City overnight. Last year during December we had hardly any snow and the average temperatures were in the 50’s and upwards. Despite this year’s snow, there are many townspeople out and about, some cleaning their cars off and others going in and out of the stores on Lawrence Avenue. Will It Be A White Christmas in Ellwood?

Winter weather is in the forecast for the next several upcoming weeks – a complete change-up of last year’s weather around this time. Last year we experienced a good portion of December in temperatures upwards of 60-some degrees, with December 26th, 2016, holding a high temperature record of 62 degrees. Winter Weather in Forecast

You may have noticed a couple snow flurries flying around this morning, which is just the start to the winter weather season. According to the 10-day weather forecast on Weather.com snow showers are expected in the upcoming weeks. Important things to keep in mind: it might be warm enough to rain during the day but the rain may freeze over night causing black ice, bridges ice before roads, and the new anti- dog tethering law is in effect this winter for the first time. Flood Warnings

Flood warnings have been issued for the following local counties: Beaver County, southern Lawrence County,  southwestern Butler County, and northwestern Allegheny County. According to eye witness reports, parts of Brush Creek Park are flooded. A strong rise is occurring on the Connoquenessing Creek in Zelienople, and the creek may rise out of its banks later this morning.
