Smiley, Wolverines Defeat Freedom 34-14, Improve Record to 3-1

Chris Smiley threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines to a 34-14 victory over Freedom Friday Night at Helling Stadium. The section victory improved the surging Wolverines record to 3-1 on the season – already eclipsing their win total from last year. On Friday, the junior quarterback hooked up with Michael Walters on two touchdown strikes as part of his aerial performance to pace the Ellwood City offense. Wander Ellwood is back for another season! Ellwood City’s own open-air street night hosts vendors, food trucks, and live entertainment among the commerce and small businesses in downtown Ellwood City. The event is scheduled to take place the first Wednesday of every month, June through October, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.. June will have a second Wander Ellwood Night in two weeks, on Wednesday, June 21st! Franklin Township Police & Volunteer Fire Department hosted its annual National Night Out Tuesday evening at the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. The event featured kids activities, fire safety, prize giveaways, and food vendors. National Night Out began in 1984 in an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. PHOTOS: 2022 Easter Egg Hunt

A rainy forecast did not deter hundreds of hoppy-go-lucky kids from taking part in the annual Ellwood City Easter Egg Hunt in Ewing Park on Saturday. The event started at 11:00 a.m. amid overcast skies and ran throughout the early afternoon with hunts for all ages. Additional events included a petting zoo, pony rides, trackless train, and a Kid’s Zone in the Rotary Shelter, which featured crafts, face painting, games and various other activities in the Bocce Court will be games. The days event are provided through The Ellwood Area Egg Hunt Committee.

Franklin Township celebrated and held their 8th Annual National Night Out Event Tuesday evening under warm, sunny skies at the Franklin Plaza in Ellwood City. The event featured free activities for children, fire safety, CPR training, prize giveaways, and food vendors. The popular Penguins mascot Iceburgh also made his appearance bringing joy to all those in attendance. The Ellwood City Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Chef, Wine & Ale event Monday evening at Shakespeare’s Restaurant in Ellwood City.  The upscale chamber event, which is open to the public, featured fine wines, craft ales, and delectable foods from a variety of local eateries. There was a silent auction and Chinese Auction. PHOTOS: 52nd Annual Bazaar

The 52nd Annual Holy Redeemer Bazaar took place over the weekend, beginning last Wednesday and stretching to Sunday August 4th on the grounds of the Holy Redeemer Parish. The food, the fun and the fireworks make the Bazaar a favorite. This year the bazaar featured a special area for kids ages two to seven called “You’re Incredible Zone,” inspired by Disney’s Pixar movie “The Incredibles.” Nightly entertainment featured performances by a barbershop quartet, a polka group, a contemporary Christian group and others. There were performances by three Ellwood City dance companies Dance Expressions; Studio P; and Diamond Dance Academy.

The Ellwood City Festival took place all weekend, there were competitions including the Little Miss Firecracker pageant and Ledger 10K race. Dia Rose Greco, daughter of Robert and Jennier Greco, was named the 2018 Little Miss Firecracker. She was dressed as a USO hostess and gave a salute to the crowd. Doug Petrik was the overall winner of the Ledger 10K race for the fourth consecutive year. His finish time was 35:35.6. Performances by local jazz, country and rock bands kept the music flowing all three days. The festival, as always, finished the weekend with fireworks provided by Zambelli International. Below…

Old Photo Friday: Tornado Rips Through Ellwood in 1985

Do you remember when the tornado ripped through Ellwood City, causing damage to homes, businesses, landscape and automobiles in 1985? The tornado, which touched down Friday May 31st 1985, affected numerous businesses and residences surrounding Ellwood City in Big Beaver Borough, North Sewickley Township, Marion Township, and on into southern Butler County.
