Tyler Alberts is on the road to Hershey with a medal on his mind. The Ellwood City junior will be competing in the PIAA wrestling championships on Thursday through Saturday and in a way, he’s been preparing most of his life for this. Ellwood, Riverside Athletes Advance to PIAA Competition

Although the winter sports season has largely concluded, local athletes are still experiencing the post-season in swimming and wrestling. Four Ellwood Wrestlers Advance to WPIAL Championship

Four Ellwood City wrestlers advanced to the WPIAL championship by qualifying in the Section 1 Individual Championships on Saturday, Feb. 20. Ellwood City’s Tyler Alberts won his weight bracket in the MAC championships held on Saturday, Jan. 9. Alberts went 6-0 to claim the top spot in the 126 weight bracket. As a sophomore, Tyler Albers won the wrestling MAC tournament, placed third in the WPIAL and advanced to the PIAA state tournament. This year, as a junior, he’s hoping to improve that performance. The Ellwood City Wolverine wrestlers had a fine individual showing at the Hampton Team Duels with 25 match wins. The competition, held at Hampton High School on Saturday, Dec. 5, pitched five teams against each other in a tournament series and inaugurates the varsity wrestling season.
