Ellwood City Wrestling Eyes Continued Growth, Playoffs

The Ellwood City Wrestling team under the direction of coach John Fleming is eyeing a playoff berth this season. Sophomore Logan Shriver placed 2nd overall in his 107-pound weight class at the Mercer VFW Wrestling Tournament last week to help boost the Wolverines wrestling team to its 12th place overall finish. Shriver, a second year wrestler, secured a place in the championship match after he earned a 5-1 decision victory over Lexi Doerflinger (Slippery Rock) in the semifinals. Also earning a spot on a podium was sophomore Derek Allen, whom finished 3rd overall in the 114-pound weight class. Allen finished 3-1 in the tournament. Two Junior High Wrestlers Place At Indiana Tournament

Ellwood City junior high wrestlers Brayden McClure (87-pound class) and Cheyenne Berglund (94-pound class) each placed fourth for the Wolverines in a 23-team wrestling tournament held last weekend. The team competed in the Indiana (PA) Eagles/Good & Associates Tournament on Saturday, January 14th. McClure and Berglund each reached the 3rd place match in their respective weight class in the tournament. McClure finished with a 4-2 record while Berglund finished with a 2-2 record. Ellwood City 7th-grader Brayden McClure won a third place medal at the Junior High MAC Wrestling Tournament that was held on Friday, January 6th at Freedom High School. Wolverine wrestler Ben Gallenz made it to the Championship Quarterfinals during day one matches Southmoreland Holiday Classic to help earn Ellwood City its 28th place finish in the two day wrestling tournament. The 139-pound Gallenz pinned Carl Raitano (Plum) at 1:57 in his opening round match-up and advanced to later earn a 9-1 decision victory over Keegan Young (Greensburg Salem) in Round 2 before falling in the Championship Quarterfinals. Ellwood City wrestlers Ben Gallenz and Derek Allen each earned three victories in the WPIAL AA Wrestling Championships over the weekend at Canon-McMillan High School. Allen earned a 7th place finish while Gallenz was defeated in the third consolation round of his weight class. Fellow wrestler, and senior, Donovan Stiffler earned two victories in his weight classes. The Ellwood City Wrestling team wrapped up its regular season this week with two matches, including their senior night on Wednesday evening. The team was defeated by Sharon 45-30 at home Wednesday and also fell to Slippery Rock 34-30 on the road Thursday. Ellwood City Wrestling Set To Finish Season Strong; Senior Night Wednesday

The Ellwood City Wrestling team is set to have its only home match of the season on Wednesday, February 9th against Sharon. The Wolverines (3-7 Overall, 2-2 League) will recognize its seniors during the home match for a Senior Night festivities. The team features two seniors, Jaden Stull (his first year wrestling) and Donavin Stiffler (his second year wrestling). The Ellwood City Wrestling team posted a 3rd place finish at the WPIAL AA Section 2-A Duals qualifying tournament at Laurel High School Tuesday evening. The team defeated Ambridge and Central Valley but were defeated by Freedom Area and the host Laurel Spartans. The top two teams qualify out of the section for playoffs.
