The South Park Eagles stunned the consecutive WPIAL Championship Ellwood City Wolverines by pounding out eleven hits en route to a 11-0 mercy-rule victory in the PIAA 3-A Softball Playoffs at North Allegheny High School Thursday afternoon. Skyla Greco didn’t allow a single run as Wolverines defeated Ligonier Valley 6-0 on Tuesday in its PIAA Opening Round contest. Greco struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits. The WPIAL champs broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Breonna Streit knocked in a run, and Megan Siegfried drove in a pair. Elwood City’s softball team has been a dominant force over WPIAL opponents in recent years, as it carried a carried a 37-game winning streak against such foes into Wednesday’s Class 3A championship game. That dominance continued as the Wolverines scored a convincing 10-0 victory in five innings against Deer Lakes at California University’s Lilley Field. The defending WPIAL champion Ellwood City Wolverines softball team received an opening round scare Wednesday afternoon, but twice were able to erase multiple-run deficits to finally oust the pesky 8-seeded Burrell Bucs 6-5 in the WPIAL Class 3A softball quarterfinals Wednesday at North Allegheny. Burrell (8-8 overall) took a 2-0 lead in the fifth, backed by pitcher Brittany Dunn, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but the Lady Wolverines used a walk and a couple errors in their half of the inning to knot the game at two. Wolverines defeated Freedom Area 16-1 on Tuesday thanks in part to Brooklyn Magill, who drove in four runners. Magill drove in runs on a single in the second, a single in the fourth, and a single in the fifth. Wolverines collected 16 hits. Ellwood Commends Softball Team

On Saturday during the festival, Ellwood City recognized the achievements of the Lincoln High School Varsity Softball team. Mayor Anthony J. Court presented the team and head coach Gary Rozanski with a commendation. The girls team claimed the section and WPIAL titles, advanced to the second round of playoffs, and remained undefeated until their last game. “The performance and accomplishment from the entire team and coaching staff have been superlative and are to be commended,” Court said.
