71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic Begins Monday

The 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic will begin on Monday, July 25 at Freidhoff Field in the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the nation next to the Little League World Series which celebrates its’ 75th tournament this season. Eight teams will compete for the title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament field is as follows: Ellwood City, West View/Ross, New Castle, Shaler, Laurel, Neshannock, Central Valley and Shenango. The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation (ECABF), one of western Pennsylvania’s oldest amateur baseball programs, held their 73rd Annual Opening Day on Saturday at the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. Players from the Little League, Minor League, Farm League and Tee-Ball League participated in a parade to Freidhoff Field-the home of the first Little League program, in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer counties. Seventeen teams, led by Mayor Anthony Court, were greeted by the Ellwood City Wolverines’ Head Coach Chris Weisz, his staff and varsity players. Weisz Named ECASD Varsity Baseball Coach

Chris Weisz has been named the Ellwood City Area School District’s Boys Baseball Coach for the 2021 season. Weisz grew up in Ellwood City and still lives here with his wife, Gabriella, and their three sons Gavyn (9), Greyson (4), and Geno (1). Ellwood City Off To Strong Start In Tri-County HS Summer League

Ellwood City is off to a strong start in the 2020 Tri-County High School Summer League. The team is 5-1 after nearly a month of the season. The league consists of 15 teams from Mercer, Butler, and Lawrence Counties. Ellwood defeated Hermitage 9-4 on Tuesday rebounding from its lone loss of the season last Thursday. On Tuesday, Zion Bunney (3 IP) and Nathan Scott (5 IP) share pitching duties for the victors. Ellwood City School Directors Approve Personnel, Spring Coaches

The Ellwood City School Board Directors voted during Thursday’s board meeting to approve personnel hires. Among the appointments were Michael Elmer who was hired as an instructional aide and David Poore and Megan Rosenberger were approved as mentors for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year and for the first semester of the 2020-2021 school year. Heidi Feltrop, secondary librarian was granted tenure. Board directors also voted to update the ACT 93 Agreement to include Paul Pishioneri and his salary increase to $72,000 for the 2020-2021 school year. After showing some jitters over the first two innings and spotting the Tigers a 5-2 lead, the Lady Wolverines settled down and scored the next 15 runs to come away with a 5 inning mercy rule shortened victory. Potter Baseball Tour Stops In Ellwood City

The Potter Baseball Tour made its ninth annual stop in Ellwood City on Friday, July 13. Led by former Ellwood City baseball standout Jeff Potter, the tour visits over 30 cities in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and Virginia throughout July. The first tour game was played nine years ago on July 2, 2010 at Sanders Field. Since then the tour has become a staple in towns throughout the Middle Atlantic states. Ellwood City Wolverines Clinches Lead in Fifth Inning to Defeat Mohawk Area Ellwood City Wolverines took the lead late in the game in a 6-4 victory over Mohawk Area on Wednesday. The game was tied at two with Ellwood City Wolverines batting in the top of the fifth when Sammy DiCaprio singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs. Riverside Players to be Presented with WPIAL Championship Rings

Tomorrow the players of Riverside’s 2017 varsity baseball team will be receiving their WPIAL Championship rings during the basketball match against Ellwood City. This is the fifth year for Riverside to win the WPIAL Championship. The team won their 2017 season 19-2, losing their last game to Central. Traveling Baseball Team Conducts Ewing Park Clean Up

Below is a photo of the Jeff Potter Baseball Tour. They are a traveling Baseball team that travels throughout PA, Maryland and West Virginia doing community service and playing baseball games for different communities. Jeff Potter is originally from Ellport Borough and was an exceptional Baseball Player. Today the Potter Traveling team conducted a clean up at the Ewing Park Nature Trail followed by lunch and drinks compliments from Red Hot, McDonald’s, and Johnny’s Pizza.
