Grasping at straws? I gave you a whole list of posibilities. Im glad that I covered it so thoroughly that all you had to come back with was a smoking comment. Shows where your mind is. Also, How do you know they left their purses on the desk? Most teachers I know place their purse in a desk drawer. Oh well, have a nice day :)

Of course the teachers have their purses locked up! Of course the teachers didn't leave their purses on their desks! That was my point!

Please tell me why you kids expect us elders to find something for you to do? I did not have the time you have to fool around at night. If you would go home and help around the house, clean your room, mow the lawn, rake the leaves, clean the windows, etc. you wouldn't have time to find outside activity. I was kept pretty busy when I was a teen ager and I am now 84 yrs. young, and believe me my mom and dad kept us busy. We weren't allowed to roam the streets at night.
I am sure I will get a lot of feedback from this but I don't care. Find your own fun!! we don't owe it to you. Get it in your head.

Thats good your parents kept you busy with mowing the lawn cleaning the windows raking leaves. And did they get the enjoyment of sittin on there butts watching you.. yes kids need to do there chores but goodness let them be kids. my son and his friends play jailbreak around my neighborhood till 10:30 at nite and the neighbors are fine I havent had one complaint. Lets complain about the drug dealers that are selling to young kids..Dont be one the complainers then when u go downtown and there hanging out. what else is there for them to do!!!

Not true you have anything involving music and since when is movies sports related. Try the library read a book. If you are in high school you have chess club,EC3. drama club no musical talent required just willing to act. Stage crew. There is also the new PE club that does things but you don't have to sports minded to be in it.

why are you people not outraged by frank lagrotta? dont you understand that it was our tax money that was used to pay those salaries? im sorry but NO ONE is worth 800-1000 dollars a week . ----i knew eventually the truth would prevail .

LOL, I make roughly $1000/week... and I think I'm worth more than that!!!

Not only are you wrong about me being a teacher, but you're also wrong about being "write"....Einstein!

As I recollect, Eisntein was a bad speller! I bet his grammar was pretty good though.

Mr. TD is pro-Dr. McCommons.

10/12/07 (07)
I believe it was a great loss that we lost Dr. McCommons also. It seems all the good people go elsewhere. Mr Popovitch was the best teacher Ellwood had, and he left this year.. What a shame

10/12/07 (08)
Does the Frank LaGrotta news really surprise anyone???? Wouldn't we all love to make 800 to 1000 a WEEK??? As far as I'm concerned he will get exactly what he deserves.

I'm sure you can certainly afford the additional schooling...as far as Real estate and nurses...they send in money to re-new a license every year, you could hardly call that continuing ed. So that leaves 4 other professions. WOW!

I am a real estate agent. To maintain my license, I have to attend 14 hours of CPE each renewal period. My cost for education during my last renewal period was $1,470. I paid the fees out of my own pocket and would pay twice as much because I love my profession.

For more information on professional licensing and CPE requirements, check out the PA Department of State's website. Professional licensing is regulated by the Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs.

Maybe someone with some free time could compile a list of all the professions required by law to take CPE credits in PA. I am sure everyone would be amazed by some of the requirements. And by the costs to maintain a professional license.

The golden state is at it again and we better riegn in the government around here befor it is to late.
I will concede that smoking is not healthy but to legislate the illegality of smoking in a car with ANY person under 18 is a blatent intrusion of privacy and one more step toward fashism and all out government control.

Two out of four now. Dr. McCommons is a good man and a good educator. Still, there may be other reasons for him not getting the promotion to superintendent. Do you know all of the facts? I doubt it. Mr. Aloi was the right choice. Let's leave it at that.

re:Find your own fun!! we don't owe it to you. Get it in your head.

You are probably one of the problems. Kids are not allowed to have fun or be in groups any more. If more than 2 kids are anywhere together someone calls the police because they are causing problems. If they hang at the park they are too loud. If they are on Lawrence Ave they are disrespectful. Kids are kids and let them be kids. Let them have fun before they have to go out in the real world. Look back at the TV from the 50's and 60's, what did the kids do in those shows? They hung out at local establishments, eating, drinking(sodas), listening or dancing to music. Heaven forbid that anyone in this town would decide to allow that to happen now. I sincerely hope that in 40 years when I am in my 80's, I have more respect for the youth than alot of people in this town seem to have.

10/12/07 (13)
i don't want to hear your music. if you want to listen to it loud then go out in the middle of nowhere and you can play it as loud as you want. maybe i don't like your music. maybe i'm offended by it. maybe i'm trying to concentrate on something else.
be considerate of others around you, or didn't your parents teach you manners?

10/12/07 (14)
To all the kids out there that think this town is boring..I can't say its not because even as a freshman in college I still find it hard to find things to keep me busy. The one thing that i do is I go to Jeff Smiley's gym. Like previously stated he does give you great rates but he also cares about the kids. He makes lifting fun for all the kids and it gives you and your friends something to do. I go there with my friends and he has helped us get into shape and in doing that he made it real fun for us. Thanks Jeff

Doctor's, Attorney's and Pharmacist are six to eight year programs.
How in the heck are we comparing a school teacher to these professions???

10/12/07 (16)
there are many jobs that require CEs....and my job is capped as well---how would you like to be working harder than ever and have a salary cap at 39 years old? and have been capped since I was 34- it really stinks!!! the cost of living goes up and my salary doesn't--and I work at a hospital where everyone "thinks" you make good money at when you work there...yea, right

10/12/07 (17)
The problem I have with teachers is healthcare. I have to pay a monthly premium for my insurance and I am a taxpayer. I am not talking about a "co-pay" either a monthly premium.

Teachers are paid by the taxpayer, who has to pay for their own insurance, but the teachers get theirs for free.

WHY???

How much more could we upgrade our facilities with computers and everything else, if the teachers would pay "ANYTHING" for their insuance premiums??

The PSEA teachers union is killing Pennsylvania!!

Ellwood City lost a great person when Dr.McCommons was not appointed to the superatendant position.

That's not MY opinion!

Well, it is MY opinion he should have been appointed.
That's 2 out of 3, anyone else want to comment?

Ya glad he left

10/12/07 (19)
For the responder who asked 'why do you care about what Frank LaGrotta paid his sister and niece"? Do you live under a rock? Because, you paid for it out of your paycheck...that's why. You might as well stay off of this site. You must not have any education.

10/12/07 (20)
If you have to ask where should you have your wedding reception - you shouldn't be getting married. You can have it in your garage, 7-11, Rite-Aid's parking lot...get with it.

10/12/07 (21)
Yeah, and the 4 other professions are doctors, lawyers, accountants and pharmacists....now compare those salaries to those of teachers which are capped.
Lets not forget parmedics, nurses, police & firefighters, code enforcement officers medical dieticians, managers in many private industries and probably more. ps teachers saleries are not capped. My wife started at $44,000 a year as a teacher 6 years later shes at $67,800. We love the school tax increases.

10/12/07 (22)
Could someone please tell me where I could have a wedding reception?
If your asking something that ridiculous and you actully have clue. then mabe your not mature enogh to get married.

10/12/07 (23)
Congratulation to those folks considering to resign from the EC football program. The thoughtfulness of procceding into the future with the young peoples interest in mind. I know this is a very hard decision to give up your control. But its better than seeing these people losing all the time. May you have 1st time success in your new adventures.

10/12/07 (24)
Bored Teenager, I completely agree, and understand where you are coming from. I am in my late teens, and have come to the conclusion that there isn't a whole lot of decent entertainment in Ellwood. Have you tried attending a Glow Show, at Frisco Firehall? They feature a few amazing local bands, and it's a great way to meet new people. If you have myspace, then add the local band "Death Of A Dying Breed". They will post bulletins about upcoming Glow Shows.

To post(26) on 10/11/07 who asked where a good place to have a wedding reception was. Wurtemburg-Perry fire hall is a very nice place for a reception. The fire dept and the auxillary set it up and clean up and tear down all you have to do is decorate. If you call 724-758-6787 you can talk to someone and they can explain everything to you.

In response to the person asking about open heart surgery, UPMC Passavant in the North Hills has an outstanding heart surgeon, Dr. Ronald Pellegrini. He is one of the best heart surgeons in this area (if not the best), and the staff at Passavant hospital is wonderful also. Dr. Pellegrini's office phone no. is 412-369-4603. Good luck!

Dear Readers:

The Butler Memorial Hospital has been rated 3rd in the nation for heart surgery. So take your friend to see Dr. Mamoo(sp), in Ellwood City. His office is in the medical building at the Ellwood Hospital. He and his team of heart surgeons preform the surgeries at Butler Hospital. This team of doctors are from Pittsburgh. Excellent place for heart conditions. My mother is living proof.

For those who care - Real Estate agents must take a contining ed. class every 2 years to keep their license active. These classes can run any where from $100 and up, depends on where they are offered.

To the person looking for a banquet hall - "The Atrium" in Prospect is outstanding. The number is 724-865-2830. You can even get married there if you like, inside or outside. Beautiful place, just past the Butler Fairgrounds on Rt. 422, next to the Garden Gate Rest. It's really not that far from Ellwood.

10/12/07 (33)
When I see the kids in that parking lot at the end of the 6th street bridge, it takes me back and reminds me that a good time doesn't have to be organized or involve money. It just needs a friend or two.

You are absolutely correct! I am the person who posted the "Things to do in Ellwood list" but I forgot the most important issue..."Just the simple fact that teenagers need a place to hang out and talk". Many of the teens I know understand that my door is always open! They've enjoyed many late-night bonfires here as well as at other homes this summer. I know I've enjoyed their company and hope they'll always feel "at home in our home".

Ellport Roller Rink
Bowling (Sims)
Movie Theatres
Soccer
Hockey (Okay, so it's in New Castle)
Jeff Smiley's Gym (he gives great rates to kids!)
Gold Medal Gymastics
Many area Dance Studios
Cheering
Basketball
School clubs like...Key Club and Chess Club etc.
Youth groups (tooooo many to name them all)
Ellwood Family Center (Dirt Cheap)
Ewing Park Nature trail
Biking
Track team

Honestly, if you are bored in Ellwood City...it's your OWN fault!

Oh brither! I am an adult and that list stinks!

Okay, what DO you like to do??? I'll make a new list!

10/12/07 (35)
I am very surprised that the population of Ellwood is not questioning the decisions of the hospital board concerning the planned sale of the hospital. This sale will have a huge impact on the quality and type of health care that will be abailable in the future to those who live in the community. Doesn't it seem that it would be appropriate for the two potential buyers to host a community meeting to explain what their plans would be for the hospital in the future, and for the citizens of Ellwood to have some input into the final decision? This is your hospital, start asking questions! The political leaders in the community need to organize a committee comprised of concerned citizens to be involved in this process. Don't wait until it is too late!

Oh yes, more EC DRAMA and GOSSIP... leave them alone- why do you care?? You wouldn't post if they all did something great, but as soon as some negative attention comes their way you're all over it!! Get a life!
EXCUSE ME!!!
I CARE BECAUSE he used tax payer monies!!

10/12/07 (38)
That's right. Keep the doors closed at the High School. But, it's OK to let the elementary kids out during recess. Where is the logic in that? Has anyone ever noticed that the gunmen in these incidents have been students. VTU, Cleveland. When have you heard of someone other than a student pull a gun in a school. I'm sure it has happened, but it seems to be students more than anyone else.

10/12/07 (39)
To the person looking for a place for wedding reception:
Look at the Wurtemburg Perry Fire Hall - it's a nice hall, reasonably priced and the food is excellent! For information, call 724-758-6787.

10/12/07 (40)
The kids have to play thier music loud, there are no more factory jobs to ruin thier hearing.
The have just found another way to do it, Call them visionary.

And for those of you that are impressed by a Lexus, Its a Toyota with a big price tag.
Infiniti, is a Nissan and an Acura is a Honda.
And all of them are just cars that anyone can walk into a dealer and buy, not like they are rare or classics.

Anyone that spends six monthes salery on a ring is an idiot, the guideline is two monthes and it dreamed up by DeBeers (the diamond people).
So take your overpriced rice burner, and your over priced shoes and purse and get out of town, I am tired of hearing about it.

10/12/07 (41)
Nothing to do for teenagers in EC- additions:

The police club boxing gym.
There's also a Karate studio.
How about a part-time job?
Pick up an instrument like a guitar and start a band with your equally-bored friends.

BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS.... your GPA. If it is not 3.0 or higher, you need to be studying and not sitting around waiting to be entertained, especially on week nights. Most kids with high GPA's do not have time to sit around and complain!

10/11/07 (01)
Perhaps they don't smoke? Grasping at straws there!
And I am sure the teachers didn't have to leave their purses sitting on a desk. I would never trust my purse sitting on a desk in the school.

I am now 40 years old but I still remember saying those exact words. Your list was very thought out and quite nice. As I read it over one thought kept running through my mind, the same thought I had as a 16,17, then 18 year old. There is no place to go and just hang out and socialize. Of all the activities in the world, setting around with friends and/or peers was and still is my favorite. We used to park by Landos, get out of the cars and talk, yeah some did smoke, and a few others would drink, but they didn't bother anyone and for the most part, we were good kids just wanting to hang out. When I see the kids in that parking lot at the end of the 6th street bridge, it takes me back and reminds me that a good time doesn't have to be organized or involve money. It just needs a friend or two.

10/11/07 (04)
"I believe that there are a few variables involved when it comes to quality sports programs and winning.

1. Parent involvement: Today, our kids are becoming less active, typically because both parents work and many don't spend as much time with their children when it comes to sports involvement. Between my ages of 5 to 10, my parents used to sign me up for sports camps and events. They would take me to practices and games and even work with me at home to get me interested in athletics. On average, these days, kids are less active as they once were resulting in less athletic kids. I attribute most of my athletic successes to supportive parents who made time for me and my brothers. Without the athletic scholarships that I earned through sports, I would not have been able to afford the education that I have today.

2.Feeder Programs in your schools: Lets take Ellwood for example. The high school football program is not consistent/coinciding with the youth football programs in Ellwood and have never really got along. There is NO youth soccer program in E.C. and our kids have to go to Riverside. The youth basketball program is pretty much non existent at E.C. anymore and it shows. There are however good youth softball programs and running programs and evidence is shown of what they do for the high school levels. How can you have quality sports programs when you don't even have quality youth sports opportunities?

3. Work Ethic: Kids who are properly taught how to train and work out will excel. Especially those who work in the off season. When I was in high school, we played basketball all the time. Coach took us to team camps and we had open gym every morning all summer long. Today, you are not allowed to call those "mandatory" workouts, but we knew that they were mandatory without question. You want to win? You got to put your time in!

4. Team Unity: We won together, we lost together. Our team was a family. We played basketball every weekend, every holiday, every free moment we had. We had a passion for the game, a passion which seems to have dissipated these days. We had a curfew, we had a respect for our coach and each other, we had discipline. Everybody had a purpose and a role on the team. Even those who did not play much and they RARELY complained about it. We respected them for being on the team and working hard everyday to make us better and they knew it.

In that order...

With all that said, things don't look so good for E.C. athletics....I sure hope things turn around for my kids because they WILL be prepared for battle!"

These are all perfect examples of why people and parents of this community should NOT be so quick to point fingers at the coaches all the time! Start working with your kids....they will also respect and appreciate you a whole lot more!

Hundreds of local residents are still in shock, but just remember,he is just a man,not a God,and he was just a politician. The good ole boy system in our area has been alive and well for many years. Most people just looked the other way.

There was actually way less to do when I was a kid, but we made our own fun and I can NEVER remember being bored. When I came home from school, I'd either go play ball, or run around the neighborhood with my buddies. In the summer, we went swimming, running through the woods, went fishing, played sports and it seemed we never had enough time to do all we wanted to do. I never had my own car either. If I did, I probably would have never been home. I think boredome sometimes comes from being overwhelmed by so many things to do and not being able to choose or having done it all already or wanting to do too much. This past summer, I went to my friends house in the afternoon and his two teenage kids were both on the couch taking a nap! I was like "Whats up with that!?" If you're bored, pick up a personal hobby such as hiking, hunting, fishing, walking, jogging or sports. You should become passionate about an activity you like most and your boredome will be taken care of....Boredom will also come from sitting around feeling sorry for yourself because you think theres nothing to do in your town. Get out there and do something with yourself, theres plenty to do!

I am saddened by the teacher comments that I see here. What has caused this lack of decent respect for our educators? I know they are all not as perfect as we may like, but they all get good results, they all are caring individuals, and they are responsible for preparing OUR children for a lifetime of learning. I fear that the disrespect and anger I read on these pages from (supposedly)adults are transferred to the children in the home and carried back into the schools.

Many of the posters seem to resent the working hours and benefits enjoyed by the teaching profession, but I remember my father telling me that 30-40 years ago, everyone who worked in the mills earned more than teachers. Most educators found summer jobs to implement their low wages. Over the last thirty years, teachers organized, became politically astute and received economic and healthcare advantages. Over the next thirty years, publc opinion, economics and political changes will probably balance out any inequities between educators and the rest of us. We should expect our educators to make a decent living, and social pressures will guarantee that educators don't attain elite status. Most communities simply can't afford to provide a luxurious lifestyle to their educators and teachers will have a harder time negotiating bigger and bigger contract packages. You can see those trends developing now, and resistance to the kind of salary increases that are unaffordable to businesses, are evident in many negotiations.
In the meantime, lets give our educators the opportunity to continue to prove their value in our schools. They have to wear more hats than any of us can imagine. Do any of us manage the day to day challenges that educators do? I don't think so!!! PP

I am saddened by what the government has done to teachers! With all their interference many good teachers are frustrated and have their hands tied.
Most of the time it is the administration that screws things up!

If you are "struggling" on a teacher's salary, then that is poor money management. Try living on two, minimum wage salaries. I could not afford to go to college, so I got my education through the military. Now my husband and I both work for little over minimum wage. We do not struggle; instead there are things we have learned to live without. Especially now that we are putting our daughter through college. It’s about priorities.

Please do something.

I heard that those three people all went on to much higher paying positions in affluent school districts. No loyalty on their part, I guess. ECASD probably couldn't afford them anyway, unless you want to consider a serious tax increase. Our loyal  administrators are doing an excellent job anyway. Are you the negative EC school smear person trying a new angle??? You should try some stress therapy, those chips on your shoulders must be very heavy, always degrading the fine job everyone at the EC schools are doing. Keep up the good work EC employees, don't let this person's stream of negativity affect your good performance!! What is your agenda, school critic?? I still think it's political. Aren't you the same person who called the employees efforts a "three ring circus?? You're desperately trying to paint a picture of incompetence in the schools, mainly at the school board and administration level. I think you support the "candidates for nepotism" who are running for school board seats, and your whole smear campaign is to try to make the incumbents who supported the policy look bad. That is not going to work with most concerned people. That was a good policy that was enacted and I'm going to support the people who voted for it and are running again. If that policy gets overturned, this district will resemble New Castle politics.

10/11/07 (24)

Whoa! I just happened to go to the Yahoo home page just now... and low and behold, there was a news headline of "Pennsylvania man buys coveted comic of Batman's debut" the article is about Todd McDevitt, of our li'l town of Ellwood City, buying a rare comic book. Way to go Todd! I think its awesome that he took our town to national news!

the link to the story is http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071010/ap_on_re_us/batman_comic

I agree about the loud music from vehicles in this town. (and every other town). I always say to myself, turn it up, they can't hear you in New Castle. Why do they seem to think that "everyone will be impressed with their music selection? I think that it's pathetic that they are so desperate for attention. When they are deaf in their old age, they'll have no one else to blame but themselves.

People in this town have money because they are hard workers and they are smart wityh their money. This town has a lot of "old" money because of the strong work ethic they had when they came to this country, and those ethics were passed down to their children. So I congratulate the hard workers this town has and will continue to have for many years to come.

Bottom Line...teachers have the best union, the best vacation time, the best pay, stress free clean environment to work in, and easiest of all jobs! YOU PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE ALL MISSING OUT ON!!! GO OUT THERE AND GET YOUR TEACHING DEGREES AND BECOME TEACHERS!!!

Since the profession is as desirable as some claim, why aren't universities flooded with prospective teachers? Why aren't you folks going out and getting your teaching degrees? Maybe you should stop complaining and start supporting those people who you entrust your children to spend 75% of each school day throughout each school year with.

Why does anyone leave their purse behind? Maybe they paniced? Maybe they weren't allowed to take it? Maybe they felt rushed and just forgot it? Perhaps they don't smoke? Perhaps they just didn't want bothered with carrying it? They had a fire drill the day before, and the bomb threat the previous week so maybe they just expected to be back in class in a matter of minutes. I know quite a few teachers left their purses behind as well. They too had to find a ride home and an alternate way into their homes.
The Police station listed a few purses in their lost and found, so leaving a purse behind isn't so outrageous.

Perhaps they don't smoke? Grasping at straws there!
And I am sure the teachers didn't have to leave their purses sitting on a desk. I would never trust my purse sitting on a desk in the school.

A message from across the miles. I often read the postings on this site to stay tuned with my hometown. I left shortly after I graduated from college to live in a small town south of here. When I arrive home for the Holidays I will be driving my Lexus. As I get my feet on the sidewalks in Ellwood I will have on my Jimmy Choo shoes. I will be wearing my Tahara suit with all coach accessories, purse, jacket, gloves, etc. I will be supporting 6 months of my husband's income on my left finger a diamond big enough to sparkle so that all of you can see it. I want to go to a football game to see what the FUNK is all about and visit the school to see how the Free lunch program is going. As I former resident of this area and born and raised in this beautiful town this is what I read about. I want to see what a monkey ball is and experience the action of our children. People this is not what life is all about put some educated articles on this site and some good information for the out of town people so we can stay tuned to the area instead of acting like we are promoting fashion for the retailers to get richer they have their own advertising department. Make this site a place where people can keep up on Ellwood with community politics and practices. I must say some of the information is humorous. I grew up knowing what this town is all about I know who the rich are. I could write a book about some of stuff that goes on daily in this town. I lived it and grew up with it. This site could be very useful, so please give some good information that the people who have left can read about and be a part of this great community.

To the teacher who made the posting about needing no other careers needing continuing education.every job needs the worker to get more education. Not everything stays the same. How would you like to go to your doctor and the only education that he has is what he/she received in med school back in the 50's? As far as ellwood needing repairs to the HS, We need a new school period. The only problem with this is is that the taxes would increase and you would need to find property which is big enough, plus the transportation of the students.Maybe instead of more shopping ares being built we could build a new school.

When is Ellwood City Police going to give tickets out to the people who play the car radios to loud.
Please do something.

I totally agree! There is nothing more annoying (or pathetic) as ANYONE of ANY AGE who cranks up the volume so loud that their windows vibrate! I refer to this as the " Over Here! Look at me, I need attention" syndrome! Grow up and turn the volume down!

Ellwood City lost a great person when Dr.McCommons was not appointed to the superatendant position.

That's not MY opinion!

10/10/07 (16)
I believe that there are a few variables involved when it comes to quality sports programs and winning.

With all that said, things don't look so good for E.C. athletics....I sure hope things turn around for my kids because they WILL be prepared for battle!

PP

I liked your comment about the donuts at the Station. If you are looking for a great selection the best that I know of are at Oram's Donut Shop in Beaver Falls. They have a cream filled donut with chocolate icing to die for, along with their big cinnamon rolls. If Ellwood Station can match these treats they will do great and I will be a frequent visitor. (I'm not worried about healthy).

For years I have maintained a low profile in this town. The reason why is because of the private lives that some of us live. I never wanted to have my family exposed in this town because people would take it to extremes. I bought cars that would blend into the crowd. I have that nice brick home that many would like to own. I sent my children to good colleges and continue to assist my children with everyday expenses. What I did was saved my first penny earned so I could spend later on my children and grandchildren. My children admire me for being able to do without my entire life in order to help them out later in life. Today my portfolio is quite large and my health is failing. I will leave behind a legacy for my family. What I am saying that all the money in the world will not give me back my health and I certainly will not be taking any of it with me. As I read so many comments on this site I read so much about what others have. This is not what life is about. As my days are numbered because of my poor health, people begin living in peace and harmony and quit worrying about what the neighbors have. You all can make a difference in this town. You are the leaders of tomorrow and our future in this town.

I think what you have said is what a few had been trying to say. Very well said. I wish you well.
God Bless you and your family.

I NEED YOUR HELP:

Hi Community, me again! I have had some success with receiving book donations for my book drive. I still have a LONG way to go. I've decided that any books would be greatly appreciated! The adults will be bringing their kids, so why can't they benefit, as well! Please email me at lesvignolini@zoominternet.net. I am willing to meeting in a "safe" location such as one of our business parking lots, etc. I need books that are gently used or new. Preferrably geared towards children, but all are welcome. Once I have a larger volume of donations I will send out the date, time and place for the book drive.

Hopefully, this is something we can continue on an annual basis. Please help support my cause to try to promote literacy in our community. Any books left over will be donated to our local library and schools. Thank you! Lesley Vignolini

I would like to make a quick comment on the teacher bashing on the site. I am not a teacher but my grandmother was for 35 years. I have my teaching degree but am forced to work in the mills because I cannot afford to support my family on a teachers wage.
I agree that some teachers make way too much money but some do not make nearly enough. Some parents are concerned, caring, and involved in there childrens education and others could not tell you that their children have spelling tests every Friday.
My point is that there are good teachers and there are bad teachers, just as there are good parents and bad parents. Unfortunately we all use the bad ones for discussions that are usually taking place between the good ones.
Education of our future is not something that should be taken lightly by anyone. If you are a teacher that is doing it for a job you are wrong!! If you are a parent that thinks it is the schools job, you are wrong!! It is everyones responsibility!! We need to all work together and get rid of the bad teachers and help the bad parents. This has to start with good ones helping each other not bashing.

In reply to: "to teacher 10/5/07 #12---how do you spell decent????not descent----being a teacher, any posting you make should have the correct grammar"

To Mr./Mrs. Grammar:

The meaning of grammar... the study of the way the sentences of a language are constructed; morphology and syntax.

If you knew what the meaning of the word "grammar" was, you would have known that a misspelled word has nothing to do with grammar at all. It does, however, have a lot to do with the fact that we are ALL human and make mistakes! Before you make belittling comments to people about grammar or anything else, maybe you should get your facts straight Einstein!!

Frank LaGrotta is being charged by a grand jury into corruption in the state legislature.LaGrotta will be charged with ethics violations. The article also stated that "LaGrotta points finger at other top Democrats" It seems bad enough he is apparently in trouble himself, but to rollover and get others in trouble ,doesn't seem very upstanding for someone, who at one time was looked upto by people in our community.Hard to figure ?

I am a 45 year old adult. I feel sorry for the kids in this town. Not only is there constant bashing of kids on this website but from listening to the scanner, there are many paranoid people living in this town about kids. People are not letting kids be kids. Yes kids can be noisy but they are having fun. Just because they are riding bikes, skateboards, or roller blades does not mean they are getting into trouble. Chances are they are not. I have met alot of respectful kids in this town. It sounds like you are one of those many good kids that are around. Maybe it is up to you kids to get something good going. There have been a couple attempts on this site to find a new business maybe it is time to listen to the teens/kids in this town for an idea. Teenagers speak up, tell us what you feel the town needs. Give someone an idea for a possible teen related business.

Please, Ellwood City, don't make fun of my question. I just want to better my understanding of a subject.

I wonder what purpose 'monkey balls' serve. I've never heard of them and didn't know what function they served (and I am not a middle-aged person) until I read about them on this site.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Monkey balls only work after the frost has got to them as the other poster wrote. They help keep spiders away. Monkey balls look like a round orange but they are green and turn a dark color. It takes 35 years for a tree to get the balls after it has been planted."

Thanks for the explanation. We don't have a spider problem (knock on wood). I appreciate your time and information. (From the original poster).

Well, well, well....you people out there are really something, designer shoes, purses, diamonds, cars, what next? Do you not know what really counts in life? Pick up the newspaper and/or watch the news, and learn about all the "bi-polar" and "depressed" people killing people. This too seems to be "a thing" on .org. None of them seek help, and/or follow the advice, they are too involved in themselves to see beyond their noses. Too many people are shot because of this mental illness which for the most part goes undiagnosed and treated. Our country is full of it--watch out! You never know who has it. They are good at hiding it from the public.

I'm a teenager and a student here in good old ellwood city..
I cannot even stress how bored i am in this town
I wish that someone would do something for the kids here
okay i know that there is this "big house" thing but like isnt it like if youre a teen and you love jesus come here..i dont know..maybe it isnt
well not all of us are into religion
so if we go there..we're probably going get preached to and we're going to feel uncomfortable
I wish someone would do SOMETHING for us
there isnt anything to do in this town

If your open to anything then try religion.
Not all Churches are alike. I know lots of kids who are involved in the church.

"I have a QVC today's special-value diamond ring. I get many compliments on this ring. (If you state 'more compliments', then I would state 'more compliments than what?'

"More compliments than what?" is a question not a statement. Your post should be written as "then I would ask, not then I would state.

How come no one is ever ticketed thats parked the wrong way, on the sidewalk and up to the stop sign on Border Ave. and other borough streets. Students at the highschool are always ticketed because they are easy targets. This I know will be blowen off because no one wants to be bothered just like every thing else in this town.

To the teacher who is upset--We all have our problems. You teachers are compensated better than any other prfession except for our politicians. You have great health insurance which does not cost you an arm and a leg,get to retire at an early age with a great pension and if you do your job right you will never have to worry about layoffs or cut backs.I applaud the teachers that go the extra mile who will sacrafice some of their free time to help a student after school with extra tutoring.I believe that Ellwood has some of the best teachers and also some teachers that are horrible and should not be teaching at all. When you decided to become an educator you knew that you would need to do continuing education.I am sure that you are compensated for doing so as well. There are allot of families where both parents work and there are also allot of single parents in EC that are doing the best that they can with what they can.I believe that teachers and parents should just quit pointing the finger at each other and put the kids needs first.

I am pretty sure that the "new" highway opened in the spring of 1976, uh, 31 years ago. Around Memorial Day I think. It was paid for by all the reclaimed rear view mirrors taken off on the old "Frisco" bridge. Mathematically that bridge was two lanes but the only thing that would seperate two vehicles side by side was air pressure.

That also was about the same time that First Seneca bank unvieled that new fangled ATM machine.

MC

OMG that is so funny! Yes, that bridge was soooo narrow... I was happy that it was gone before I started driving.

Ellwood City lost a great person when Dr.McCommons was not appointed to the superatendant position.
